Dear Families,

This past Wednesday we celebrated the 100th Day of school.  It is startling to realize that we are already this far into the school year.  There has been so much going on the last few weeks and time is just flying by.

Our 100th Day theme was “100 Days Stronger, Faster, Smarter.”  We started our Wednesday with 3 stations, each of which developed one of those themes.  We exercised in the gym to show our strength, we read books in the library to show our “smarts,” and we concluded with a team relay to show how fast we can work together.  It was a great start to the morning and a joyous celebration of our community.

I want to remind our families that we have moved into open registration for the 2017-2018 school year. This means that registration is now open to the general public and spots in classes will be given on a “first come/first served” basis.  Thank you to all of the families who have completed their paperwork.  I will be reviewing packets and accepting them into the system over the next few days.

If you have not completed your registration please make sure to do so.  It is important for us to know that you will be returning so there is no risk that your child will lose his or her spot.  If there are questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know immediately so we can work together to resolve any problems.  We are always striving to do better and wish to help all of our families continue their journey here at Saint Francis.

We had a wonderful Calcutta last Friday night.  It was a tremendous event -- generating both a lot of fun and a lot of funds! -- and all of the hard work of the Home and School Calcutta committee paid off.  I want to thank all of the families who supported class projects and class baskets and all who participated in the evening.  This is such an important fundraiser for the school and your contribution makes it possible for the event to do so well.  I am so thankful for this supportive community

God Bless,

Eric Becker

HOME AND SCHOOL UPDATES:

Calcutta 2017 (like Super Bowl LI) was a lot of fun!
We also raised more than $13,000 for Saint Francis Xavier School!  Many thanks to the parents, former parents, SFX alumni, and faculty who turned out in support of our wonderful community.  I am particularly grateful to committee members: Darlene Hester, Ryan and Caroline Smith, Mike Myers, Johanna English, Stacey Zierak, Jami Daigle, Donna Ritchie, and Dena and Tom Prim.

I would be remiss if I didn't publicly thank the unflappable and patient Ms. Nancy for selling tickets, managing the influx of gift cards and putting up with my constant requests for updates.
We are keenly aware of the time and effort that go into producing the beautiful class projects and amazing class baskets.  These alone brought in nearly $2,000!  Thank you!  A list of the highest bidders for the baskets and projects is at Ms Nancy's desk if you are curious.

Generosity was in abundant display - two people who were in the final ten sold their balls - not for their own benefit, but for the school's - with a total of $575 going to SFX!  The final three people standing at the end of the night also split the $1,500 jackpot and donated $300 back to SFX. It was truly a great night.

SPORTS NEWS:

7th/8th Grade Girls
The 7/8 Girls played great on Sunday against Mater Christi. The girls worked the ball inside with pinpoint passing, and were relentless on both the offensive and defensive boards with creating several second and third shot opportunities. Mel lead the scoring with six points, Cassidy knocked down four points, Anna scored two, and Maelyn rounded out the scoring with one point. Although the team could not come away with the win, the final score did not reflect how well the girls played throughout the game.

4th/5th Grade Boys
On January 29th in Winooski at 2:00pm the SFX 5th grade basketball squad took the St. John Vianney to the wire.  In a nail biter to the end, St. Francis spread their scoring around with Sam Parris dropping in 5 points, Dallas St. Peter with one 3-pointer, Owen Messineo, Shane Mobley with 2 each, AND scoring their first points of the season…. Stosh Zuk and Colton Fay making huge baskets.  Elijah Wood just missed a shot from the charity stripe to claim his first score.  These efforts kept the game tight, but St. John Vianney was able to hold us off for the victory.  Never give up boys!

On Saturday, February 4th the St. Francis 5th grade team enjoyed a pre-SuperBowl Super Slumber party at coach St. Peter’s home in Essex.  Pizzas, football, mini hoops, popcorn, the movie “Hoosiers”, and a McDonalds breakfast filled the schedule.  Everyone seemed to have a GREAT time!

A slow start in the game on Sunday (4pm at RICE vs. Christ the King, 2.5.2017) may have been related to the late night of fun the night before.  With only 4 points at the half, SFX had a big margin to overcome, but with 8 points in the 4th quarter, Saint Francis showed their resolve.  Sam Parris had 4 points and 8 rebounds, Mason Griffiths also added 4 points with 4 rebounds, Dallas St. Peter 2 points and 6 rebounds, Coleton Merchant 2 points and 3 rebounds, Owen Messineo 2 points and 1 rebound and Shane Mobley 2 rebounds.  Hustle and hard work from Caleb Kruger, Colton Fay, Stosh Zuk, John Ahonen and Elijah Wood did not go unnoticed.  We will get them next time boys!  GO SFX.

6th Grade Boys
On Saturday the boys piled in a van and headed to St. Johnsbury.  They played Good Shepard and got to play in the academy's gym.  It was a great game and the boys played well. They took the win with a final score of 35-13.  Seth Richards had 10 points, Evan Havereluk had 7 points, Carter Blanchard had 6 points, Luke St. Peter, Logan Rivait and Seneca Duroscher both had 4 points.  Even with the win, I would bet the best part of the day was the van ride with the team.
On Sunday the boys played St. John Vianney.  The boys had another great game they took the win with a final score of 31-20. Each game they play better as a team, it is awesome to watch.  Seth Richards had 12 points; Carter Blanchard had 7 points;  Logan Rivait, Ayden Johnson, Evan Havereluk, Seneca Duroscher, Asher Schnfield and Kellen Bourgeois all had 2 points a piece.  These boys are a lot of fun to watch, you should come on out to Rice this coming Sunday for our 4:00 game against Christ The King!

7th Grade Boys
SFX was up 12-8 at halftime, couldn’t withstand a late 4th quarter charge by St. Albans Catholic falling 24-21.  Scoring - Kayden Burke 9 points, Michael Stockbridge 6 points,  Imani Mbayu 4 points, Haydn Bourgeois 2 points.

8th Grade Boys
The SFX 8th grade boys took on Cathedral just a few hours prior to the Patriots amazing comeback in Super Bowl LI.  The SFX Golden Angels didn’t need a TB12 comeback in this one, leading the entire contest.  The boys inflicted numerous steals and caused turnovers throughout the game while showing solid rebounding.  Cathedral hung tough, netting several long-ball three pointers, although were down 21-10 at half against the hometown favorites.  SFX pulled away in the third quarter and into the fourth, coming away with a 55-28 win.  Scoring - Salada Mayanage 14 points, JJ Stockbridge 10 points, Carson Corrigan 10 points, Max Gordon 8 points, Zachary Roy 6 points, Chris Prim 4 points, William Burke 3 points ( 3 of 4 free throw attempts).  The boys improved their record to 7-3 on the season.  Boys 8 team traveled to St. Johnsbury to face the Good Shepherd Catholic School. In a close half with SFX leading 16-12, SFX came out firing, jumping out to 29-22 lead after 3rd, pulled ahead with strong 4th quarter out scoring Good Shepherd 16-1. Scoring – JJ Stockbridge 12 points, Saladi Mayange 11 points, Deon Mitchell 8 points, Carson Corrigan 5 points, Max Gordon 3 points, Zachary Roy 2 points, William Burke 2 points and Chris Prim 2 points. The boys reported that the pizza on the way home was excellent.

The upcoming games are listed in the above calendar of events.  Come cheer the teams on!
