As we begin October, we are back in full swing at school.  This is an exciting time, but one that can be tough for students and families.

This is the time of year when students are starting to dig into new material in school as they also try to balance a busy life outside of school.  Many of our students are involved in multiple extracurricular activities, which can cut into their school work time and sleep time.  When students fall out of a routine and do not get enough sleep, they have a harder time performing at their best levels.  I appreciate the importance of allowing students to participate in many activities.  This is the time in their lives to try everything.  What I ask from you is to create a schedule that is consistent and works for your family.

I think the best schedules are built on three major areas:

First: Sleep
We all know what happens when we are exhausted. Children feel the effects of sleep deprivation even more strongly. Students need to get plenty of sleep in order to be successful at school.

Second: Time Management
Homework, school projects, sports practices, household chores and time with friends are all very important. Finding a way to do all those things without adding too much stress to a child’s life is key. We need to show students how to manage their time.  Providing a work space for them where they have room, and can focus, will go a long way.

Third: Family Time
No matter how much is going on, children need time to be with family.  They need time to share and discuss what is going on and know that other people are supporting them.  Family time should not be overlooked.  Your children work hard for us and their teams and they need the chance to slow down and just be kids.

October is a busy month at Saint Francis.  Please feel free to remind me of my own advice during the month if I look like I am a little bit frazzled!  Enjoy this beautiful Friday.

God Bless,
Eric Becker
