🌾🌽🥕Vegetable oil was originally a by-product of Proctor and Gamble’s soap-making process and condemned as “toxic waste."
Then they realised they could make a buck by hydrogenating cottonseed oil and passing it off as a cooking oil. It wasn’t long before other hydrogenated oils like canola, soybean and sunflower oils hit the shelves.
Paid scientists began singing their praises and advised consuming them in place of “unhealthy” animal-based saturated fats that people had ate for hundreds of years without any issue.

Can Vertical Farming Be Organic?

Vertical farming is an innovative approach used to produce crops in urban areas that can supply entire cities with fresh and healthy food without depending on traditional agriculture. There is an ongoing heated debate, though, as to whether vertical farming produce should be awarded an organic certification or not.

In the EU, vertical farming produce can’t be certified as organic due to the requirement that only crops grown in soil can qualify for such certification. In the US and Asia, vertical farms can be certified organic, and there are already examples of companies certified.

However, the regulations for organic production and certification vary from one country to another, with some authorizing the labeling of vertical agricultural products as organic and others strongly opposing it. In this article, I will review some of these regulations and also show you the difference between being certified as organic and actually being organic.

Organic Growing Practices in Vertical Farming
Organic agriculture has received a great deal of attention over the last few years. An increasing number of people are now choosing organic products not only for their healthy properties but also to reduce their carbon footprint.

Organic farming is about producing high-quality crops that have the least possible impact on the environment. Meaning, the use of harmful synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other soil and water contaminants is strictly prohibited. Farmers are recommended to use organic seeds if possible and to categorically avoid using genetically modified seeds (GMO). In organic farming, every step of the process should be in full harmony with natural ecosystems and habitats.

Vertical farming, on the other hand, represents a more modern approach to the traditional organic farming system. Plants are grown indoors through automated systems such as hydroponics, aeroponics, or aquaponics, where the soil is replaced with water and nutrient solutions or biomass waste.
Due to the absence of soil and sterile indoor conditions, the risk of contamination is close to zero, thus eliminating the use of pesticides and herbicides. Since biotic and abiotic factors are negligible in vertical farming, non-GMO seeds and seedlings can thrive easily without experiencing external stress.
Vertical farms have a positive impact on the conservation of natural resources as well. They have implemented advanced systems that collect rainwater and water released by biological processes and then reuse it to irrigate the plants. Natural light and effective state-of-the-art LED systems powered by renewable energy are used as a source of energy.

Saw Palmetto for Men: Better than Drugs!
From the Natural Path Newsletter
by Linda Woolven M.H., R.Ac & Ted Snider

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate, increases the frequency and urgency of urination. It also causes a weak stream, straining and retention. Remarkably, it will affect the quality of life of more than half of all men in their lifetime and 90% of men over 85.

The available drugs have frequent side effects, including sexual dysfunction. The extract of the herb saw palmetto berry has been shown to be comparable to the drugs for improving symptoms and for reducing the size of the enlarged prostate. But, while it is at least as effective, it is much safer and does not cause sexual dysfunction: in fact, it improves erectile dysfunction.

A just published review compared the herb to the drugs and put all the evidence together (Drugs & Aging 2022;39:235-43).

In a head-to-head study with the α-blocker tamsulosin, saw palmetto was just as effective at reducing International Prostate Symptom Scores. It was just as good at improving urinary flow and prostate volume. For men with severe symptoms, it was better (Eur Urol. 2002;41(5):497–506).
A second comparison study also showed saw palmetto to be as good as the drug (Prostate. 2015;75(16):1857–67).

Since then, other studies have proven saw palemetto to be the equal of α-blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors (Int Urol Nephrol. 2016;48(5):645–56; Prog Urol. 2020;30(10):522–31). Studies have also continued to show that, unlike the drugs, saw palmetto actually significantly improves erectile dysfunction (Urol Androl. 2012;84(2):94–8).

In real-world studies, saw palmetto is better tolerated than α-blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors. In one of the studies, 16% of men suffered adverse events on α-blockers and 14% suffered adverse events on 5α-reductase inhibitors while only 1% of the men on saw palmetto did (Int Urol Nephrol. 2016;48(5):645– 56).

The dose of saw palmetto berry extract used in the studies was 320mg a day that is standardized for fatty acids (often 85%-95%).

Based on results like these, the European Association of Urology guidelines now recommend saw palmetto berry as a treatment option for men who want to avoid the side effects of the drugs, especially sexual side effects.

In systematic reviews and meta-analyses, saw palmetto has been shown to improve erectile dysfunction and to cause significantly less ejaculation disorders, ejaculatory dysfunction and less loss of libido.
