This Sunday:
Michael and All Angels

This Sunday's Scriptures
Daniel 10:10-14, 12:1-3 | Psalm 103:1-5, 20-22 | Revelation 12:7-12 | Luke 10:17-20

The archangel Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the heavenly army, defeating the dragon (the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan). It is important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God’s victory ultimately comes by Jesus’ death and the testimony of his followers. The power of God’s truth gives us confidence in the face of evil on earth, even in the face of our own death.

 Music this Sunday
Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven, ELW 864 | If God, My Lord, Be for Me, ELW 788 | Come Down, O Love Divine, ELW 804 | Go Make Disciples, ELW 540 | Choir Anthem: "Come Down, O Love Divine" by Francis W. Douglas

 Liturgy Notes for this Sunday
This Sunday we celebrate Michael and All Angels.  This festival dedicated to the honor of the archangel Michael arose in the fifth century in Rome. Michael is not a saint, but in Jewish angelology one of the four archangels who carry out the will of God. The stories about Michael are war scenes, situating him within the final battle between good and evil. The focus of the day has broadened to include thanksgiving for all the angels, who are seen as messengers of the word and will of God.

Our sung liturgy for September, October, and part of November comes from ELW Holy Communion Setting One.  This festive setting was newly published for the ELW and is comprised of movements by Mark Mummert, Thomas Pavlechko, and Robert Buckley Farlee for the hymnal.  This setting is designed to be led by organ, but is also written to work very well with piano and other instruments. We give thanks to God for this unique and festive worship setting!
