Newsletter for the Week of October 7th, 2018

This Sunday:
Twenty-first Sunday of Pentecost

This Sunday's Scriptures
Amos 5:6-7, 10-15 | Psalm 90 | Hebrews 4:12-16 | Mark 10:17-31

The rich man who comes to ask Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life is a good man, sincere in his asking. Mark’s gospel is alone in saying that Jesus looked on him and loved him. Out of love, not as judgment, Jesus offers him an open door to life: sell all you own and give it to the poor. Our culture bombards us with the message that we will find life by consuming. Our assemblies counter this message with the invitation to find life by divesting for the sake of the other.

 Music this Sunday

 Liturgy Notes for this Sunday
Our sung liturgy for September, October, and part of November comes from ELW Holy Communion Setting One.  This festive setting was newly published for the ELW and is comprised of movements by Mark Mummert, Thomas Pavlechko, and Robert Buckley Farlee for the hymnal.  This setting is designed to be led by organ, but is also written to work very well with piano and other instruments. We give thanks to God for this unique and festive worship setting!
Before Sunday at UniLu
Join us as we package 20,000+ meals for the food insecure in Philadelphia with the help of End Hunger NE! In partnership with Grace Lutheran, Holy Trinity Lutheran, and University Lutheran Churches.

Happenings at UniLu
Congratulations Pr. Fritz!
He has been awarded a Lewis Fellowship for 2018-2019 through the Lewis Center for Church Leadership of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC.  He will be traveling to meet with fellows from across the country for learning and community.   As part of the program Pr. Fritz will be away from October 8th through 13th in Washington DC.  Pr. Fritz will be available by email during the week at pastor@uniluphila.org
Join us every Wednesday at 6:00 PM for a FREE dinner and discussion at 6:00 PM. This is a time for students and young adults to come together and relax with others who share our faith. Anyone is welcome to come out and join us Wednesday evenings for a few minutes or the whole time, whatever your schedule allows.
UniLu Choir is Back!
YOU are warmly invited to join our University Lutheran Church choir. Some of us are classically trained musicians and some of us are beginners and others are in-between. There's a spot for you, too! Not only will you help enhance our worship experience, you will become a part of a wonderfully caring, supportive group! Choir rehearsal is before service at 9:15 AM.  Have questions?  Email Brian at musicdirector@uniluphila.org.
Thursday Bible Study!
Join us every Thursday afternoon at 4:00 PM for dinner and Bible, led by UniLu members Ray and Carl. Each week we focus on the texts to be read during worship the following Sunday. This is a great way to explore the Bible with friends!
Join us Sunday, October 28 at 6:00 PM for a community conversation with the Executive Director for the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs, Todd Snovel.  In addition to this position he also teaches college-level courses on the studies of genders, sexualities, and identities.  He has been a voice for equality and access to education, the arts, and healthcare and enjoys vocal performance, theatre, travel, and healthy living.

Join us in our candlelit sanctuary Sunday, October 28, 2018 at 7:00 PM for Night Church. We gather together in song, prayer, and contemplation as we worship together in this brief (30 minutes) Holden Evening Prayer.  The speaker is Todd Snovel. At 6:00 PM, all are invited to join us for a community style dinner (you're invited to bring something but not obligated) and enjoy a time of fellowship.
Join us on Sunday November 4, 2018 at the 10:30AM service for our remembrance of the faithful departed.  You are invited to submit names of loved ones who will be remembered through the form.  Deadline for submission of names is October 29th 2018.  Hand written names will not be accepted.
