Welcome to the the first newsletter for 2017! We're back in full force and this month are focusing on aquaculture. Read below as we address a potentially devastating issue within the prawn farming industry.

Australian prawn farms in danger from the deadly white spot disease

Over the festive period, whilst some of you were tucking into your customary prawns, UV-Guard were made aware of a potentially, industry threatening outbreak. A number of Queensland prawn farms have become contaminated with the deadly white spot disease.

Although not harmful if consumed by humans, the disease is highly infectious and poses a danger to other crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters. Mortality of infected crustaceans can occur within four days of visible signs of the disease.

It is thought that the disease was brought into Australia by imported green prawns being discarded into local waters. The government have supported this logic by banning frozen crustacean imports.

Farmers who have been impacted are required to destroy and dispose of all potentially affected crustaceans prior to decontaminating their operations. It is a huge blow to the industry and the businesses involved.

UV disinfection - safeguarding fish farms against white spot and other aquaculture diseases

UV disinfection is a dependable and flexible water treatment method for safeguarding aquaculture farms against all variants of the white spot virus. In fact, there are no microorganisms known to be immune to UV light.

UV disinfection has the following aquaculture applications:

Fish, shellfish and crustacean farms
Improve quality and increase production yields of salmon, bass, abalone, oysters, prawns, mussels, shrimp and any other aquaculture stock whilst protecting against specific diseases prone to the different species in the grow out stage of farming.

Safeguard broodstock, hatching fish, larvae and fry by using non-chemical pathogen protection methods at this highly sensitive and critical farming stage.

Marine well boats
Protect fish stocks during transportation to and from onshore and offshore aquaculture farming facilities.
