Member Newsletter • September 2019

We hope you had a great summer of fun in the sun, relaxing, getting outside for lots of climbing, and not reading emails! After spending our own lazy days of summer, the time has come for another newsletter. We have lots of big news in store for you: from a new guidebook to a new location, fall promotions to big upcoming events. Now, we're finally ready. We have a lot to share with you!
Let's lead with the elephant in the house:

Coming summer 2020: BoulderHouse Langford Parkway!

Yes, we're adding a second location, as part of the complex surrounding the Westhills Stadium. There are still a lot of details to be determined and announced, so to keep you in the loop we've created a new-gym FAQ on our blog. Feel free to send us your questions — you can send them in the comments below the blog post or reach out to us on social media (some of you already have). As we have answers, they'll be added to the FAQ, along with any new information.

We hope you're as excited by this expansion as we are.

Events

We're Turning 3: Happy Birthday to us! You're invited to our three-year anniversary on Friday, October 25, from 6:00 pm till late.

Last year you wowed us with your costumes. You can dress up again this time or come as you are, have fun, and celebrate the continued growth of our bouldering community. But do be aware, there will be prizes for the best costume!

You can also take part in our annual scramble comp. Register in advance for $20 or at the door for $25. It's free to just come and watch. We'll have registration available on our website soon, or you can speak to staff at the front desk.

We are coupling our anniversary party with BC Climbing day. This event is presented in partnership with Sport Climbing BC and will be an open house to all teachers in the morning and students in the early afternoon. After which we'll close up shop and get busy decorating for the festivities to follow. Doors for the party open at 6:00 pm!
Climbing takes place in some of the most beautiful places nature has to offer. Climate change has put many crags and bouldering areas at risk. As stewards of the land, we at BoulderHouse do our best to minimize our impact on the environment, and we share your concerns for the future of the planet.

So on Friday, September 27, the gym will be closed until 6:00 pm so staff can stand in solidarity with the Global Climate Strike. If you can, please join us for the events on the Legislative grounds between noon and 5:00.
Western Regionals: BoulderHouse is hosting the Western Bouldering Regionals on December 14 and 15. You'll find registration details on our website in early November and in our next newsletter.

We'll be closed for setting in the days leading to the comp, and then open for spectators during the comp.
Shoe Demo: Come to the gym on Thursday, October 17, between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm, and you can demo shoes from La Sportiva.

Shoes won't be available for purchase, but ff you find a pair you like you can order them online. Try before you buy!
Gym closures: The gym will be open regular hours on Thanksgiving (Monday, October 14), Halloween (Thursday, October 31), and Remembrance Day (Monday, November 11).

We're closed until 6:00 pm on Friday, September 27, while staff participate in the Global Climate Strike

We're closed all day on Thursday, October 24, and in the morning and afternoon of Friday, October 25, for BC Climbing Day, opening at 6:00 pm for our three-year anniversary party!

We'll be closed December 12 and 13 to set up for Western Regionals, then open Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th to spectators. Check our website calendar, as details may change.

We're closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day.
You can get updates on gym events on our online calendar or check with staff next time you’re in the gym if you have any questions.

Climb to Conquer Cancer

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our fundraiser for Tour de Rock – Cops for Cancer. You helped raise nearly $1,000! We have made a donation to Cpl Michael Smith's campaign. If you'd still like to donate to Smith's efforts, you can do so here

Six Sweaty Weeks of SPS Wraps Up

SPS was huge this year! A total of 206 climbers took part in the six-week competition, up from 120 the previous year. Folks packed the place for the wrap-up scramble comp and beach party — you all looked fabulous in your tropical outfits. Results from both SPS and the final scramble comp are listed below. Congratulations to all the winners.

This year's final scramble comp was made extra special thanks to the hard work of those taking part in the B.I.G. Initiative's route-setting workshops. We saw many of you tackling their challenging and creative problems on the wall throughout the night.

A special thank you to all our sponsors for helping make this year's comp such a success:
