 SPRING  2019
An optimist is the human personification of Spring. —Susan J. Bissonette

✏️ Debuts Today! ✏️

Welcome to the world, Linus!

I am so proud to announce that LINUS THE LITTLE YELLOW PENCIL (Disney Hyperion) is now available wherever fine books are sold. LINUS is an ode to art and points out the power of sharing the creative process—and is about being kinder to our creative selves.

✏️Why Linus? I wrote and illustrated this book for us who have that little critical voice in our heads. You know the one. The one that says our creation isn’t quite up to snuff. The one that might keep us from trying again—the one both young and old must work more smartly with. Like Linus learns to. Art teachers, students, anyone with a creative streak will identify and love Linus when they see themselves in him. I know I do.

✏️But what’s it about? Linus loves his artwork and hopes to enter the family art show. But Ernie, his eraser, becomes the voice of self-doubt. He creeps into Linus creative process, obliterating his work. After some words from the wise Smudge, Linus has an idea that just might help him and Ernie create a masterpiece—together.

✏️This book is especially near and dear to my heart. The first book I wrote and illustrated in over five years and of those I think its my best yet. I love it so much that I dedicated this book to my collaborator and mentor Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Linus is a book in her spirit. I think you’ll love Linus too. You can learn much more about Linus here on his very own webpage.

But don't take my word for it. There's lots of love for Linus.

✏️ The Reviews Are In!

“The digital drawings offer an unbridled energy that veers between bold poster styling and the intriguing chaos of a relentlessly creative artist’s sketch pad.”
—Publisher’s Weekly

“Magoon's digital artwork uses scanned paper textures manipulated in Photoshop, with color used masterfully—the result emphasizes the different looks achieved by using the various art supplies. The simple but expressive faces on the implements are standouts. Magoon gets his message across: Be the best you you can be.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“The narrative is packed with art-related puns (“bristling with envy”; “brush aside”; “drawn to the very edge”; “Go, get that lead out”), and the digitally created illustrations are filled with movement and color...The idea of the two ends of the same pencil learning to get along will appeal to children as they watch what the pair are able to create together with a bit of cooperation.”
—Maryann Owen, Booklist

From the blogosphere: Librarian blogger Stephanie over at Kiss the Book Jr. blog says of LINUS: “The artwork is top notch, so creative and at times, just beautiful. One of the best picture books I have reviewed in years.” Full review here. Thank you Stephanie!

School Visits!

Over the past 6 months I met with hundreds of students in over 20 schools. I Skyped with schools in Indiana, Kansas and Washington. In the real world I travelled to schools in Arizona, New Hampshire and Maine. While in Maine I spoke about RESCUE & JESSICA to an audience at my old high school in Skowhegan. It was one of those full circle moments!

I also traveled to Tucson for their enormous and awesome festival of books. There I was on a panel (see below) and spoke about digital illustration. What a fantastic time! Thanks, Tucson!

At the Tucson Book Festival I appeared on a panel about humor in Children's Books. Above left with me (L-R) are K-Fai Steele, moderator Juanita Havill, Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel and Jonathan Stutzman (thank you K-Fai for pic!). At above right is a Magoon Author family meeting in Tucson! Kekla Magoon and Me. :)

Most my visits though were local here in the Bay State. Highlights? I presented to students at Witchcraft Heights Elementary (can you guess what MA town that one’s in?). I appeared at Jarrett Krosoczka’s Meltdown Fest in the Berkshires (see pic at top of this section). Most recently I offered my first iPad drawing workshop in a 3-day, 7 session residency at two local elementary schools. Its my hope and dream to inspire young authors and illustrators to do what I do: read, write, draw—heck, be creative. The world needs to hear their voice too.

I’m currently booking 2019-2020 school visit dates. Check out my school visit page for much more info. Drop me a line; I’d love to visit your school!

✏️  Honors ✏️

Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship by Jessica Kensky & Patrick Downes

Jessica Kensky, Patrick Downes and I were awarded the Christopher Medal for Rescue and Jessica. I recently attended the Christopher Award honors event in NYC to receive my award. Wow, what a night! I was inspired by other artists in the room including dynamic wife and husband duo Anna Kang and Christopher Weyant. Good music too. Thank you Christophers!

  • Selected for ILA 2019 Teachers’ Choice Reading List which features books that kids might not discover w/o intro from educator.
  • Nominated for the 2019-2020 Keystone to Reading Elementary Book Award in Pennsylvania. More here.
  • March madness winner reveal. You gotta check this out.
  • Your support over the past year helped us raise significant funding for NEADS World Class Service Dogs. In fact, you helped us raise enough money to help jumpstart the breeding program at NEADS! Jessica and Patrick tell me that Rescue cannot wait to become an “uncle” and we promise to keep you in loop regarding all important puppy progress.

✏️ Upcoming Books ✏️

STRAW by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by me. Out February 4, 2020 from Disney Hyperion. The conclusion of the SPOON and CHOPSTICKS series of books. As Amy put it, the last Straw. And yes, he's a paper straw. Literally. He's printed in a book made of paper. Stay tuned! ;)

✏️ Family Update✏️

  • My oldest son (8th grade) recently tried out for his high school jazz band—and was accepted! We are so proud of him and we can't wait for his trumpet music to fill the house for the next school year!
  • My youngest son (6th grade) wrapped up his Lacrosse season with a victory! He'll be on a swim team this summer. He plays trombone and is going to try for middle school jazz band.
  • Christy is about to complete her first school year as a high school librarian at Bedford HS in Bedford MA. She has absolutely loved it and its been great for us to have a librarian living amongst us book hounds!
Yes, it's been quite a busy & exciting past few months. I've loved every moment! With the Headliner Tour and Straw on their way, there's more to come. I hope you'll follow me along for the ride—please like and follow via social media links below. That's all for now! I'll be in touch again for the summer edition. Thank you so much for your support; I wouldn't be here without it. Happy Spring!
