The Rick and Susan Sontag Center for Collaborative Creativity January 2023 Newsletter
Hellooooo and happy new year!
As we enter 2023, we want to share something new we’ll be diving into this spring. We’re really excited about this one.
Starting in a few weeks, we’ll be launching CoLab Mexico, the Hive’s newest global initiative designed to provide students with the opportunity to forge collaborative, cross-cultural partnerships and create social and environmental impact.
For this spring’s CoLab Mexico pilot, the Hive will partner with Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), in Monterrey, Mexico. Advanced human-centered design students from Claremont will collaborate with advanced interdisciplinary design students from UDEM to tackle a design challenge focused on creating social and environmental impact through urban agriculture.
In Southern California, we’re partnering with SEED, a startup democratizing agtech with accessible and equitable tools for small plot gardeners and farmers. In Monterrey, UDEM will partner with urban gardens in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García. Across both regions, students will look at how these organizations might best help their communities maximize and sustain the positive impacts of urban farming. Along the way, students will share research, insights, and ideas across regions, working together to think both critically and creatively about how local context shapes global challenges and solutions.
Each week, students from Monterrey and Claremont will connect via Zoom to build this design community. We are creating travel opportunities for Claremont students to visit Monterrey and for Monterrey students to visit Claremont, to augment the experience by meeting as a community in real life.
We’re really excited by the energy, enthusiasm and expertise that UDEM is bringing to this partnership, and we’re enlightened by the work SEED and San Pedro Garza Garcia are already doing in their communities. It has been inspiring to work with like-minded people to bring this pilot to life – people who use design to make positive impact across the globe!
We anticipate learning quite a bit through this pilot, and we’ll be sharing more as we do. We encourage you to reach out with any ideas, questions, or suggestions to help us make our newest initiative better!
Former Hive post-bac, designer, and coach, Isa Berardo reflects on their experiences leading and developing the Hive's Designing Your Team program. Designing Your Team uses human-centered design frameworks to help varsity athletic teams articulate, strengthen, and live out the team's core values, on and off the field. The Hive is hiring!
We are looking for two Post-Baccalaureate Associates to lead our Designing Your Team program and help oversee our making spaces. Post-Baccalaureate Associates will help drive the growth of vital creativity programs and spaces for liberal arts college students, faculty, staff, and athletes. We are accepting applications until January 31st. These two-year, full-timepositions will begin between March and July 2023, making this an ideal opportunity for undergraduate alumni and 2023 graduates. Sound like you? Send us your app! Links to the two full job descriptions and application requirements can be found below.
We would love to see a diverse group of candidates, so if this opportunity is not for you, we’d appreciate spreading the word among your peers/networks.
