Last summer the Collections Team found a portrait of an Admiral in a box in our art collection. There was no information to identify him or where the portrait had come from. We were able to figure out a few things about him from the portrait.

  1. He was not an aviator.

  2. His awards included WWI and WWII victory medals, Haitian Campaign Medal, Yangtze Service Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign medals among others.

  3. His portrait was painted in 1962 by an artist named McAllister probably from an official Navy photograph. We thought he was a Naval Academy graduate based on the ring he was wearing - probably around 1915-1918.

We contacted both the Naval Academy Museum and the Naval History and Heritage Command and they were also not able to identify him.

As a last resort, we posted a picture of his portrait on Facebook and quickly had an answer from several local St Mary’s County residents. His name is Vice Admiral Felix Johnson who retired to St Mary's County in the 60's after a very distinguished Navy career and then became very active in the county including as secretary of the St Mary’s County Historical Society. There was an education center just outside the main gate of the base that was named after him which has since been torn down.

He never was stationed at Pax River and had no ties to the base so the collections committee decided that his portrait didn’t belong in our collection. We contacted the St Mary’s County Historical Society and asked if they would be interested in Admiral Johnson’s portrait. They replied that they would be happy to take it back. We discovered the portrait had hung in the Historical Society’s house for many years. They didn’t know how it made it’s way to our museum or when it happened so we returned it and it is now hanging in the same room where it had been displayed many years ago. Mystery solved!

With Halloween just around the corner we thought we’d remind you that we sell astronaut suits and helmets in the gift shop! Guests can come into the gift shop for free any day the museum is open or shop online at the link below.
