Let’s start with a trivia. April is Panagyaman Rice Festival, the National Celebration of Successful Rice Harvest, declared through Proclamation No. 606, s. 2004. Consistent with this celebration, we feature the symbolisms in agricultural festival and the recommended postproduction practices for the farmers. An interesting research on a bacteria that can help rice survive drought is also highlighted. We also include tips on getting that prized scholarship grant. This summer, please encourage your vacationing relatives and friends to visit PhilRice for knowledge adventure.

BACTERIA HELP RICE SURVIVE DROUGHT – STUDY
|
BY ANNA MARIE BAUTISTA

|
Certain species of rhizobacteria can modify the structure of rice roots, thereby increasing the plant’s ability to tolerate drought, a recent study showed. In their research, PhilRice scientists Roel Suralta, Jayvee Cruz, and their team, together with the students from Muñoz National High School, found that treating rice with Streptomyces mutabilis can enhance its root system development during dry spell.

Farmers often get excited come harvest time. Unfortunately, some overlook that postproduction practices are as important as growing rice. A 2010 study by the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization shows that 16.47% of rice is lost on postproduction. When saved, experts said, the losses could have covered the amount of rice imported annually.
