Ever wanted to be a boss?
York, PA native Lisa Nguyen('21) might not have "Chief Executive" tagged to her LinkedIn profile but she's undoubtedly on the path to great leadership. Ask her what she was doing at the age of 5 and you'll understand why...
"Growing up in a low-income household with parents who speak no English has been quite the uphill battle. Ever since I was five years old, I have accompanied my grandparents, extended family members, and parents to every doctor’s appointment, pharmacy visit, hospital stay, insurance consultation, and bank meeting to translate.
I also translated for my grandfather’s cataract surgery when I was six years old and was able to observe the procedure as well as converse with many members of the medical team! Throughout the years, my role progressed to include even more responsibility until I basically took over managing my parents’ bills and statements and immigration casework for extended relatives in my family’s home country (Vietnam).”
If you're having trouble imagining what that would be like when you were 6 years old..you’re not alone.. What’s incredibly wise of Lisa is her ability to get the lesson out of her circumstance.
"I lost a large portion of my childhood due to this unique responsibility, but it has entrenched a value of respect and understanding within my day-to-day outlook of life. Experiencing firsthand the language barrier that my parents did not overcome has taught me through many instances of frustration to be patient and empathetic when examining different cultures through the current societal structures today."
