Tax Credit donations at work!
This week, 1st grade was able to go on a field trip to Sabino Canyon and Tax Credit Donations paid for their bus! Thank you for your generous Tax Credit donations!

Participating in the Public School Tax Credit program is easy and free, and virtually all residents who file taxes in the state of Arizona are eligible!
By claiming the Public School Tax Credit, you choose to direct a portion of the Arizona taxes you already owe or have paid straight to Sam Hughes to support essential school programs.
Have questions? Watch the short informational video at this link and then don't wait!  Participate today!
Ready to designate your tax credit? Follow the easy steps found here.  Please note that our school is listed as "Hughes Elementary".

Welcome Back and Happy 2020 from OMA!!
1)  OMA CLASSES! k-2  We are jumping right in!  Kinder and 1st are learning about the instruments of the orchestra and singing a song about MLK. And 2nd grade is doing an MLK art project.  🙂

2) CHOIR will be starting up TUES JAN 14 with new songs!
7:45am in Tallmadge Hall Tues Jan 14 🙂
Please Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes (3-5 times a week) is a really great.  Anything more than that is excellent! 🙂  LOG YOUR PRACTICE and get KUDOS!
    a) PLEASE remember to bring your instruments on your assigned day (T/TH for 4th grade, W/F for 5th, W for 3rd)  I do not have many extra instruments - especially in band!!  Sometimes I do, but the idea is for kiddos to be responsible.  If your child forgets three times, then I ask that the instrument stay at school for a while.  Thank you for your help!
     b)  GASCHO HELP: Does your child need some extra help on his/her instrument? I am available every Wed, Thurs and Fri morning from 8-8:30am to work with your child if they are struggling.   OR... if they are wanting a challenge, I can also move them ahead if they are ready to move beyond what we do in our short time in class together!  :) Thank you!  and it's FREE!!  yippee!
     c) Please remember to CARE for the instruments.
     d)  Please PLAY WITH and PRACTICE your instrument!!  Having these wonderful instruments at home and not practicing them is like having a fun friend around that you never bring out to play. 🙁
**And remember: LOGGING practice and getting parent signatures gets KUDOS for your kiddo!!
TRYOUTS are Tues Jan 14 & Thurs Jan 16 - you needed to turn in your packet over the break and sign up for a time using the link to SIGNUP GENIUS.  If you did NOT get info on this and you did turn a packet in before the break, please email Ms Gascho at
There are only a few spots left to sign up!
REMEMBER:  Rehearsals for Talent Show are Tues Jan 28 and Thurs Jan 30 right after school, and the SHOW is on Fri Jan 31 at 6pm!
Musically and Artfully yours,
Ms. Gascho

It's the time of year to start thinking about Science Fair!

Science projects are due in Talmadge Hall on Monday February 10th, and the judging will happen on Tuesday February 11th.

Registration forms
are due to the front office on Tuesday February 4th.

Check out the tips on how to get started in both the classroom packet and the "science fair inspiration" document! They have good advice about the hardest part (picking a topic) and coaching us parents through some of the tough moments (frustration on the part of kids and parents).  There are also great checklists about the preparation of the science fair project board.

If you have any questions, or would like to help out with Science Fair, please contact Margaret Evans at (or text 203-606-6665).
Check Your Email For Your After-School Classes Invoice
This past Monday, the district conducted the lottery for placement into After-School Classes [Community School]. If your child enrolled into a class via lottery, you should have received an email stating so and a paper copy in the red folders. If your child did not place into any After-School Classes, you should have received an email telling you this. If your child enrolled into a class, you should have received an email from a program called Kinderlime with a link to an invoice you can pay online. If you did not receive these communications or have questions or concerns, please email Please also contact us if you would like to mail in a check rather than paying via Kinderlime.
If you received your class assignments but wish to drop a class before the start date, please contact us. Most classes have waitlists, so if you wish to drop your class, that will be welcome news to someone on the waitlist.
The district has specified that Kinderlime payments are due by January 12. If you do not pay your invoice by then, you risk losing your place in the class.
Classes start Thursday, January 16. Thank you for your understanding as the district pilots this new process.
