Hello Sam Hughes CREW!

Thank you for all the families that came to our 1st PTA Meeting on Tuesday. I am excited to announce that we had over 50 families join our PTA since the beginning of the year! Once you join the PTA you are able to participate in any votes that occur throughout the year. For more information on joining PTA respond to the newsletter.

There are many ways to get involved here at Hughes! Please check out the 2 for CREW flyer on ways you can volunteer and support the many wonderful activities that are a part of our year.
 
PBIS Rotations- CREW is our compass!

Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, we teach kids about the expectations for behavior early and review them often. The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment.

We are CREW at Hughes and we believe that all members of our community are:
C- Caring and Kind
R- Respectful and Responsible
E- Excelling Everyday
W- Working Together

This week we spent time learning the expectations for behavior in different areas of our school. Students visited the Hallway, Restrooms, Cafeteria, Library/Computer Lab, and Playground. Please be sure to ask your child to tell you about the rotations, and what they learned this week!

Also, I wanted to remind you that we wear our red CREW shirts on Mondays! If you are in need of a CREW shirt, please respond to this newsletter. T-shirts are $10.00 (kids and adult sizes available).
 
Curriculum Night
Please join us for Curriculum Night, Tuesday, August 20! In order to accommodate parking, we have two sessions for Curriculum Night.

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades will meet from 5:30-6:15 pm 
3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will meet from 6:30-7:15 pm

Curriculum Night will start in the cafeteria for introductions and few opening remarks. Families will then head to classrooms to meet with teachers. Teachers will provide an overview of the year. See you on Tuesday!

Join our version of an Open House!  Visitors will start in the Multipurpose room for a brief introduction and then head over to their students classrooms.  Learn all about your students teacher, curriculum, goals and more!  Don't miss out!
A couple OMA announcements:  
 
1) OMA starts the week of the 19th! I am very excited to see everyone again and to meet all our new students and kinder! :D  Yay!
 
2) CHOIR starts the week of the 19th!!!  Mark your calendar!  The first day of Choir is Tuesday Aug 20 at 7:45am in Tallmadge Hall.  It's a meet and greet and we will start reviewing a song or two to sing at Sam Hughes Meet Yourself!(Thurs Sept 5)
Please fill out a CHOIR packet (located in a lobby bin across from the office) and turn it in to Ms. G's bin in the office OR bring it on Tues Aug 20 to our first choir meeting!  The packet is important - it gives your child permission to be in choir and also has our tshirt order form!
***Any 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader (boys and girls) can join choir and come sing with us!  We do a variety of songs and we perform throughout the year.  If your child loves to be a part of a group and loves to sing... consider joining choir!  CHOIR packets are available now.

3) Fourth graders, start thinking about which string instrument you are interested in learning!  Fifth graders, start thinking about which band instrument you are interested in learning!

4) Third graders, keep an eye out for your recorder order form!

5) OMAPalooza!  Mark your calendar!  Tues Dec 17 at 3:30pm in the courtyard. You don't want to miss this awesome culmination of the semester in OMA!  Every grade level is featured and every student is involved.  We even feature several songs where everyone in the school sings together!

We are still raising funds for supplies and to lower the overall cost of tuition. We have raised $2200, which is about half way to our goal. The great news is that you can help out at no cost to you. The PTA has partnered with a Tucson non-profit group, the Educational Enrichment Foundation, to allow you to contribute to Community School at no cost to you using the Arizona charitable tax credit. 
 
If you are already contributing to the school via the public school tax credit, please continue to do that. If you are already doing that and are looking for another way to support our students, please consider contributing to Community School via the charitable tax credit. The limits for that tax credit are $400 for individuals and $800 for couples. You can claim both credits (the public school tax credit and the charitable tax credit) at the same time, meaning you can max out on both tax credits if you so choose.

The Book Fair is coming!!  Times and dates will be posted.  We must share the space so times vary each day.

This Book Fair will feature eWallet.  Any easy way to give your child money to buy books with!  

Book Fair support our Birthday Book Program along with providing new books to our library, teachers and students.  Thank you for your support!
We show our school pride Monday mornings by wearing our red CREW shirts!  Oops is your CREW shirt in the wash? You can still join in by wearing red!

Does your child need a new CREW shirt?  We have them available! XS, S, M & L.  They are $10.  You can purchase one by bringing in money in a sealed envelope with your child's name, teacher's name, and size of shirt listed on it.  Please place the envelope in the silver PTA box (by the front door) or hand it to your child's teacher. [questions or requests please reply to the newsletter]

Remember, CREW shirts are our uniform during field trips!
