Hello Sam Hughes CREW!
Stories that Soar! The Magic Box is here!

The Magic Box is hungry for original stories!  Which class will win the prized Mini-Magic Box this year?

Parent Teacher Conferences

I would like to thank you for taking the time to schedule a conference with your student’s teacher. Student achievement is increased when there is a strong partnership between schools and families. Thank you for working with us to best serve your student(s).

Move On When Reading (MOWR)

In the state of Arizona, there is a state law that encourages schools to monitor students’ reading development in order to ensure that students are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. A letter was sent home from Michelle Merrick, the district MOWR Coordinator, explaining the state law and how TUSD is complying with the state statute.
September is Attendance Awareness Month!
Will you help make this September one of our best attendance records?

In September, Tucson Unified School District is partnering with school districts across the country in celebrating September as Attendance Awareness Month.

Thank you,

Kathryn Bolasky

1) We are having fun in our OMA CLASSES.  We have been talking about balance and personal space, and 2nd grade will be doing some visual art in the style of Joan Miro, a surrealist artist from Spain.
2) CHOIR is also humming along!  Wonderful singing at SH Meet Yourself last week! We are starting to learn some new songs now, so please check out the GOOGLE link for NEW music to be practicing at home.
3) BAND and ORCHESTRA kiddos!
    a) Instruments are assigned for band and Orchestra now!  Presently we are learning all the ins and outs of how to hold, assemble, and care for our precious instruments.  When classes are so large (25+) it takes time for me to adequately and effectively work with every student.  I know they are VERY EXCITED to take instruments home!  I promise they will get to!
     b) Thank you SO much to those of you who rented/ or own instruments that your child can use.  This allowed everyone to have their own instrument to take home and practice! Thank you so much!
IF YOUR CHILD HAS A RENTED or OWNED INSTRUMENT: They need to be bringing them to band (every Wed/Fri) or orchestra (every Tues/Thurs)  Thank you again!
 4) RECORDER kiddos!
Recorders (as you well know😉) have gone home for practicing! Exciting times!  I do keep track of (and reward) students who remember to bring their recorders and folders to class every Wed!  Please Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes in the beginning (3-5 times a week) is actually a great start.  Anything more than that is excellent!
Musically and Artfully yours,
Ms. Gascho
Did you know that all classrooms have a morning and closing routine?  These routines are essential to start the day off well and end it on a high note!

Here are some tips to be an Attendance HERO:
  • Make sure you allow enough time in the mornings for unexpected traffic delays.  Remember traffic only gets worse as it cools off here in Tucson!
  • Try to schedule appointments for after school gets out.
  • Wait until the bell rings to pick up your child.
  • Do you have a planned absence? Let your child's teacher know and ask about what your child can do to keep up with the class.
  • Remind your child to use proper hygiene to avoid sickness.
Encourage your child to learn to spell their list!  Join them in collecting pledges for their hard academic work!  This major Fall Fundraiser funds our ability to support our teachers and students.  Thank you for encouraging and participating! Every dollar counts!

Testing will occur during the week of September 23rd.  Tests will be sent home before Fall Break so that you can show off your amazing spelling skills to gain pledges! Pledges are due October 17th.

Your support means we do not have to use our students to sell catalogs, candies, etc.  The PTA loves being able to offer this academic fundraiser.  Thank you!
