Attendance Concerns
As we near the end of the first quarter, it is crucial that I take time to remind our community just how important it is for students to be on time and in school each day. Student attendance influences many factors, from funding to our state letter grade.

Did you know, that if a student misses 10% or more of the school year, they are considered chronically absent? That is 18 days a year or 2 days a month.
Research shows how big the impact can be. A study in California looked at kids who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade. By the end of third grade, only one in six of them were proficient readers. But of the kids who missed less than 5 percent of school, two-thirds were proficient.
Last year, our Absenteeism rate increased from 2.65% to 10.13%! Over 10% of our students missed 10% or more of the school year.

That large increase will have a significant impact on our State Letter Grade - Chronic Absenteeism is 10% of the configuration (attendance for all students K-5th is used in the calculation).

I have pulled an attendance report for students that have missed 4 or more days this year, and 12.5% of our students have already missed 10% of the year!!!

Please help us decrease our Chronic Absenteeism rate by having your child at school on time and here every day!

Thank you in advance for your support!

1) We continue to have fun in our OMA CLASSES.  Kinder is learning how melodies go up and down.   First grade learned a song about vowels and have been playing the xylophones.  2nd grade is starting work on composing their own yucky ingredients for a musical witch's stew!
2) CHOIR is also doing great!  I am looking forward to singing with them next SAT OCT 26, 10am at the 2nd St Fall Festival!! I have uploaded some new songs, so please check out the GOOGLE link for NEW music to be practice at home.
3) RECORDER kiddos!  Kiddos have gotten their white belts!  And hopefully they are practicing their yellow and orange belt music now at home.  We will begin testing next week.  Exciting times!  I do keep track of (and reward) students who remember to bring their recorders and folders to class every Wed.  Please Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes in the beginning (3-5 times a week) is a really great start.  Anything more than that is excellent!
4) BAND and ORCHESTRA kiddos are already rocking!!
    a) PLEASE remember to bring your instruments on your assigned day (T/TH for 4th grade and W/F for 5th)  I do not have extra instruments - especially in band!!  Sometimes I do, but the idea is for kiddos to be responsible.  if your child forgets three times, then I ask that the instrument stay at school for a while.  Thank you for your help!
     b) Please remember to CARE for the instruments.  They should NEVER be left longer than 10 minutes in a hot car.
     c)  Please PLAY WITH and PRACTICE your instrument!!  Having these wonderful instruments at home and not practicing them is like having a fun friend around that you never bring out to play. 🙁
**And remember: LOGGING practice and getting parent signatures gets KUDOS for your kiddo!!
     d)  I am available every Wed, Thurs and Fri morning from 8-8:30am to work with your child if they are struggling.   OR... if they are wanting a challenge, I can also move them ahead if they are ready to move beyond what we do in our short time in class together!  :) Thank you!  and it's FREE!!  yippee!
5) OMAPalooza is in December!  Mark your calendar!  Tues Dec 17 at 3:30pm in the courtyard. You don't want to miss this awesome culmination of the semester in OMA!  Every grade level is featured and every student is involved.  We even feature several songs where everyone in the school sings together.  yay!
Thank you,
Sara Gascho
Thank you for your amazing support!

Did you forget? Please bring your pledges in first thing on Monday!  Please drop by the office or Mrs. Grogan's room.  Thank you!!
Mr. Rodarte To Host Signings of His New Book

Did you know Mr. Rodarte has authored a collection of ghost stories? The multi-talented third-grade teacher published La Llorona: Ghost Stories of the Southwest in April. Later this month he will host a series of book signings at local book stores. The first will take place Saturday, October 26, 1pm-2pm, at Mostly Books, where he will kick off their Halloween Party. He will also be at Clues, Unlimited on Saturday, November 2, 1pm-3pm, as a part of festivities that will also include sugar skull decorating. Come on over and get a signed copy of Mr. Rodarte's book!
Did you know that all classrooms have a morning and closing routine?  These routines are essential to start the day off well and end it on a high note!

We will be encouraging being present and bringing our attendance issues to light.  We want the best for all our students.  Being in school is essential for student success.

Being on time raises their confidence when they enter the classroom for the day.  Being late often causes anxiety and embarrassment.  First bell is at 8:32 am.  Students are late if they are not in their classroom by 8:40am.  If a student is late, the parent or guardian must sign them in or call the school.

You can be the change needed to combat our attendance problems.  Make school a priority.  Make being on time or early a priority.

Attendance affects our school letter grade, student success, student attitude and so much more.

Thank you for teaching your student to be an Attendance HERO!
