Stories that Soar! Performance
This year’s performance was outstanding! The students of Sam Hughes fed the Magic Box over 2000 stories…the largest amount in Sam Hughes history! (Last year’s total was just over 1200). I would like to thank the teachers for providing opportunities for students to develop their writing skills- elements of a story, character development, plot development, imagery, word choice…the list goes on and on! I would also like to thank the families and friends that supported students while they were writing their stories.
Thank you CREW for your continuous support of Stories that Soar!- I truly believe this program contributes to our academic success and positive school community! There is no better way to start our year and I hope we continue this tradition for many years to come.
 
Student Art Fundraiser
Thank you for supporting Stories that Soar! by purchasing items from our Student Art Fundraiser. All of the proceeds from this fundraiser directly support Stories that Soar! Our students produced some wonderful works of art this year! Thank you for your continued support.
 
State Letter Grades
On November 1st, The Arizona Department of Education announced school letter grades based on the 2018-2019 student achievement data and Sam Hughes received a “B” rating.
The model that determines a school letter grade promotes growth in student achievement. Growth in student achievement scores makes up 50% of the letter grade calculation. Actual achievement on the AzMERIT accounts for 30% of the letter grade calculation. The remaining 20% includes factors such as Absenteeism (% of students with 19 or more absences –excused and unexcused), proficiency and growth of students with English as a second language, Acceleration and Readiness. As a faculty and staff, we have already begun the process of analyzing the data, celebrating our strengths, and identifying focus areas for improvement.
 
I am currently working with our district’s Assessment and Evaluation Team to prepare a presentation and informational session, for our parents and families, to learn more about the state letter grade system and our school’s data. This session would allow us to review the letter grade model, our school’s performance, and present resources that are available to help students prepare for the state assessment.
 
It is my hope to offer more than one presentation/session. I will communicate the dates and times of the sessions once they are finalized. Thank you in advance for your time and support of our efforts to continually improve student achievement.

No School November 11
In honor of Veteran’s Day, there will no school on November 11. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the individuals have served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces. Thank you for your service!

1) We continue to have fun in our OMA CLASSES.  We are about to start learning all our fun songs for OMAPalooza!  Look for links to music to practice at home and lyric sheets 🙂 in upcoming newsletters.
2) CHOIR is also starting new songs for the holiday season!
 
4) RECORDER kiddos!  We have been testing for yellow and orange belts!  After this point the music gets a little more challenging!  Please Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes (3-5 times a week) is a really great start.  Anything more than that is excellent! 🙂  LOG YOUR PRACTICE and get KUDOS!
 
3) BAND and ORCHESTRA We are working on our 3rd and 4th levels - to earn our stickers as well! 🙂 Practice practice practice please! 
    a) PLEASE remember to bring your instruments on your assigned day (T/TH for 4th grade and W/F for 5th)  I do not have extra instruments - especially in band!!  Sometimes I do, but the idea is for kiddos to be responsible.  If your child forgets three times, then I ask that the instrument stay at school for a while.  Thank you for your help!
     b) Please remember to CARE for the instruments.  
     c)  Please PLAY WITH and PRACTICE your instrument!!  Having these wonderful instruments at home and not practicing them is like having a fun friend around that you never bring out to play. 🙁
**And remember: LOGGING practice and getting parent signatures gets KUDOS for your kiddo!!
     d)  GASCHO HELP: Does your child need some extra help on his/her instrument? I am available every Wed, Thurs and Fri morning from 8-8:30am to work with your child if they are struggling.   OR... if they are wanting a challenge, I can also move them ahead if they are ready to move beyond what we do in our short time in class together!  :) Thank you!  and it's FREE!!  yippee!
 
4) TALENT SHOWCASE - Is your child interested in sharing a special talent they have with the school?  Start thinking about participating in our ANNUAL TALENT SHOWCASE! (Takes place at the end of Jan/early Feb)  Packets for trying out for the showcase will be out by the end of NOV - packets need to be filled out BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR WINTER BREAK!
 
5) OMAPalooza is in December!  Mark your calendar!  Tues Dec 17 at 3:30pm in the courtyard. You don't want to miss this awesome culmination of the semester in OMA!  Every grade level is featured and every student is involved.  We even feature several songs where everyone in the school sings together.  yay!
 Thank you for your amazing support our community give back themed spirit week!  Your generosity will make an impact on our community.  We hope that our students realize how much impact they can have on their community as well.

It is important to note that late paper orders can not be accepted.  They will have to be ordered online.  Paper orders are due Friday, November 8th.

Products are scheduled to ship to the school on December 11th.  

If your child did not submit artwork but you would like to submit a piece and order - You Can!  Either order via a generic paper order form (available by the front office) or scan the art and email it to me (with your child's name and teacher) or physically hand me the art and I will scan it and send you the online order code.  Thank you!

Huskies you wrote 2333 stories this year!
Mrs. Grogan took the Mini Magic Box Trophy this year with 639 stories!  Way to go 5th grade!

We love seeing your enthusiasm and your joy as you walk to feed the magic box.  We hope you find some wonderful items/gifts through our Student Artwork Fundraiser which funds the magic box.  We are currently at $500 of our $4,000 dollar goal.

Does your child need a new CREW shirt?  We have them available! XS, S, M & L.  They are $10.  You can purchase one by bringing in money in a sealed envelope with your child's name, teacher's name, and size of shirt listed on it.  Please place the envelope in the silver PTA box (by the front door) or hand it to your child's teacher.  We have a limited quantity of Adult shirts available as well! [ questions or requests please reply to the newsletter]

Remember, CREW shirts are our uniform during field trips!
