Hello Sam Hughes CREW!
State Letter Grades
Save the Date!
We will be hosting an information session on how the letter grade is determined and will be presenting Sam Hughes Data. During this session, we will review the letter grade model, our school’s performance, and present resources that are available to help students prepare for the state assessment. More details to follow!
 There will be 2 sessions:
  • January 14th at 5:00 pm
  • January 17th at 8:30 am
Benchmark Assessments
Quarter 2 Benchmark Assessments will begin December 2nd and go through December 13th. Students in grades 2 through 5 will be assessed in ELA and Math on Highly Leveraged Standards from the district Scope and Sequence. This quarter students will be asked to produce a writing sample in addition to taking the multiple response question assessment. Students in 3rd -5th will complete all of their benchmark assessments online through the SchoolCity Platform. 2nd Grade students will be able to submit handwritten writing samples and complete the multiple response questions online.

Please help our students be successful by having them here on time, well rested, and with a healthy breakfast. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grades can support the testing grades by creating a quiet learning environment. This means respecting the signs that are posted in the testing areas.
OMA Palooza
Mark your calendars! OMAPalooza will be December 17 at 3:30pm in the courtyard. Please join us for a fun filled evening of musical performances from our very own student CREW! Don’t forget your chairs and blankets to enjoy the show!!!

Hope you have a great week and thank you for being CREW!

1)  OMA CLASSES!  We are learning all our fun songs for OMAPalooza!  Here are links to practice at home and lyric sheets 🙂
Kinder link:
3rd, 4th, 5th GR link:
2) CHOIR is also starting new songs for the holiday season!
3) RECORDER kiddos!  You have received the Holiday Packet for OMAPalooza. Keep practicing! At this point the music is more challenging!  Please Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes (3-5 times a week) is a really great.  Anything more than that is excellent! 🙂  LOG YOUR PRACTICE and get KUDOS!
4) BAND and ORCHESTRA  🙂 Practice practice practice please! Kids get KUDOS for signed and filled out practice sheets!
    a) PLEASE remember to bring your instruments on your assigned day (T/TH for 4th grade and W/F for 5th)  I do not have extra instruments - especially in band!!  Sometimes I do, but the idea is for kiddos to be responsible.  If your child forgets three times, then I ask that the instrument stay at school for a while.  Thank you for your help!
     b) Please remember to CARE for the instruments.
     c)  Please PLAY WITH and PRACTICE your instrument!!  Having these wonderful instruments at home and not practicing them is like having a fun friend around that you never bring out to play. 🙁
**And remember: LOGGING practice and getting parent signatures gets KUDOS for your kiddo!!
     d)  GASCHO HELP: Does your child need some extra help on his/her instrument? I am available every Wed, Thurs and Fri morning from 8-8:30am to work with your child if they are struggling.   OR... if they are wanting a challenge, I can also move them ahead if they are ready to move beyond what we do in our short time in class together!  :) Thank you!  and it's FREE!!  yippee!
5) TALENT SHOWCASE - Is your child interested in sharing a special talent they have with the school?  Start thinking about participating in our ANNUAL TALENT SHOWCASE! (Takes place at the end of Jan/early Feb)  Packets for trying out for the showcase are by the front office - packets need to be filled out BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR WINTER BREAK!
6) OMAPalooza is in December!  Mark your calendar!  Tues Dec 17 at 3:30pm in the courtyard. You don't want to miss this awesome culmination of the semester in OMA!  Every grade level is featured and every student is involved.  We even feature several songs where everyone in the school sings together. Plan to be CREW and stay for the entire performance!  yay!
Musically and Artfully yours,
Ms. Gascho

Community School Registration To Start Soon!
Registration for the eight-week session of Community School beginning in January will be happening very soon. We are just waiting on some final approvals from the district before we can release the registration packet with the course schedule, course descriptions and registration form.
Many parents told us that the current registration process -- in which you wait in line on a given morning -- is not convenient for them. For this reason, we are piloting a new registration process. In this new process, parents will fill out their registration forms and drop them off in the school office or email them to us. We will then email you a bill for the classes, which you can pay online. The aim here was to accommodate the many parents who could not wait in line on registration day due to work or family commitments.
For classes that have more kids interested than spots, we will hold a lottery to fill the spots. We know of other schools using lotteries for enrichment classes with success. Siblings will be kept together in the lottery. For the two classes with a very high level of interest, robotics and cooking, students can take the class only once in a school year. If you have a child taking robotics or cooking now, they cannot enter the lottery to take it again in January.
We are currently planning to release the registration packet (course schedule, course descriptions, registration form) next week via email and paper copies in the red folders. We are aiming to make December 19 the deadline by which you return your registration forms. HOWEVER, this timing is dependent on us getting some final approvals from the district, so it is only tentative right now. Keep your fingers crossed.

Some of the new classes we are hoping to bring to you for January are ceramics, Panda Club (Chinese language and culture), classic playground games, magic, music theory and a new cooking class. The current cooking instructor, volunteer Terry Kyte, will be opening a new restaurant early next year and won't be able to teach his class in January. But we will be able to get him back again later in 2020. We will continue to offer art, capoeira, choir, drama, folklórico, Legos, recycle squad, robotics, sewing, Spanish and yoga.
