Hello Sam Hughes CREW!

Labor Day is Monday!  Enjoy your long weekend.  Remember there is no school on Monday.

September is Attendance Awareness Month!
In September, Tucson Unified School District is partnering with school districts across the country in celebrating September as Attendance Awareness Month.

Why is reducing chronic absence so important?

  • Students suffer academically if they miss 10% or more of school days--that's as few as two to three per month.
  • Studies show that children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school--and themselves.
  • When children are absent, schools get fewer resources from the state, resulting in less funding to pay for teachers and books. Chronic absence in kindergarten predicts chronic absence the following year, so even the attendance patterns of our youngest students affect funding down the road.

What are we going to do about it?

  • Every family in Tucson Unified School District can join the effort to get children to school every day.
  • At the district level, Tucson Unified will be sponsoring a district-wide attendance competition for the month of September. The elementary, middle, and high school that demonstrate the largest gain in September attendance (over their 2018-2019 school year attendance) will be recognized/rewarded at the end of the month.
  • At the school level, each school will be provided chronic absence data specific to their site, so they may coordinate interventions with students and families.
  • Schools will be provided with a Toolkit to Reduce Chronic Absence, and asked to take on their own site specific projects for improving attendance awareness.

Help us cultivate a habit of good attendance starting in kindergarten, through graduation, giving our children the opportunity to learn and succeed in school.

Will you help make this September one of our best attendance records?

Thank you for a wonderful Pancake Breakfast and Book Fair! Join us at our next annual event, Sam Hughes Meet Yourself!  Our amazing Husky Choir will be performing for the first time this year!   Bring to a dish to share at our Annual Sam Hughes Meet Yourself Potluck, September 5th at 5:30 pm.

Thank you for another wonderful week at Hughes!

Ms. Bolasky

Did you know that all classrooms have a morning and closing routine?  These routines are essential to start the day off well and end it on a high note!

Here are some tips to be an Attendance HERO:
  • Make sure you allow enough time in the mornings for unexpected traffic delays.  Remember traffic only gets worse as it cools off here in Tucson!
  • Try to schedule appointments for after school gets out.
  • Wait until the bell rings to pick up your child.
  • Do you have a planned absence? Let your child's teacher know and ask about what your child can do to keep up with the class.
  • Remind your child to use proper hygiene to avoid sickness.

1) OMA CLASSES are in full swing!  And I am enjoying reuniting with my Huskies from last year AND getting to know all my kinders and new kiddos! We have been learning about what OMA is, so please ask them!  And talking about the 4 arts and exploring what they are 🙂

2) CHOIR is also in full swing!  I am really enjoying working with your children!  It's a big group, so we are going to be sounding so full and wonderful!  If your child is feeling like we are moving kind of fast, please ensure them this is ok and NORMAL when we first get started.  They will catch on!  Remember to use the GOOGLE link for practicing the music at home.  NEXT WEEK IS OUR FIRST PERFORMANCE AT: Sam Hughes Meet Yourself! (Thurs Sept 5) Yay!!  I look forward to you hearing them sing!

3) BAND/ORCHESTRA/RECORDER kiddos!  Instruments are assigned for band and I am working on Orchestra to be done over the weekend! 🙂
     A)  Band/Orch instruments do not come home right away.  They first need to learn how to assemble and disassemble them properly, how to hold them, play them, and be responsible with them! It usually takes a couple weeks to get all that down.
     B)  Recorders have begun and hopefully they will start bringing them home next week!  Exciting times!  Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes a day in the beginning (3-5 times a week) is actually a great start.  Anything more than that is excellent!

4) OMAPalooza is in December!  Mark your calendar!  Tues Dec 17 at 3:30pm in the courtyard. You don't want to miss this awesome culmination of the semester in OMA!  Every grade level is featured and every student is involved.  We even feature several songs where everyone in the school sings together!

Musically and Artfully yours,
Ms. Gascho

Thank you Ombre Coffee of Bisbee Breakfast Club for the coffee at Pancake Breakfast!

Cross Country Running is back!  Sign up at Sam Hughes Meet Yourself!  First practice is September 6th from 2:45 to 3:45 pm.
We show our school pride Monday mornings by wearing our red CREW shirts!  Oops is your CREW shirt in the wash? You can still join in by wearing red!

Does your child need a new CREW shirt?  We have them available! XS, S, M & L.  They are $10.  You can purchase one by bringing in money in a sealed envelope with your child's name, teacher's name, and size of shirt listed on it.  Please place the envelope in the silver PTA box (by the front door) or hand it to your child's teacher. [questions or requests please reply to the newsletter]

Remember, CREW shirts are our uniform during field trips!
Have you set up your conference time?  If not please get in touch with the teacher. Thank you for scheduling your meeting time.
Don't forget to download the app so you can start scanning so we can keep earning!
