Attendance Concerns
As we near the end of the first quarter, it is crucial that I take time to remind our community just how important it is for students to be on time and in school each day. Student attendance influences many factors, from funding to our state letter grade.

Did you know, that if a student misses 10% or more of the school year, they are considered chronically absent? That is 18 days a year or 2 days a month.
Research shows how big the impact can be. A study in California looked at kids who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade. By the end of third grade, only one in six of them were proficient readers. But of the kids who missed less than 5 percent of school, two-thirds were proficient.
Last year, our Absenteeism rate increased from 2.65% to 10.13%! Over 10% of our students missed 10% or more of the school year.

That large increase will have a significant impact on our State Letter Grade - Chronic Absenteeism is 10% of the configuration (attendance for all students K-5th is used in the calculation).

I have pulled an attendance report for students that have missed 4 or more days this year, and 12.5% of our students have already missed 10% of the year!!!

Please help us decrease our Chronic Absenteeism rate by having your child at school on time and here every day!

Thank you in advance for your support!
Thank you for spending time practicing the Spellathon Words with your students. We appreciate the time and effort you are putting in to supporting your students in preparing for the test and for helping your student get pledges.  Thank you for being CREW!
Benchmark Assessments
Students in Grades 2-5 are completing the Quarter 1 Benchmark test.  The assessment is computer based and student will complete it online, using a laptop. I encourage you to ask your student how they did on the benchmark and how they felt working on the computer!
End of 1st Quarter and Fall Break
October 4th is Grading Day (NO SCHOOL for students), marking the end of the 1st quarter.  The following week, October 7-11, is Fall Break- NO SCHOOL for students. The Sam Hughes office will be closed for the week and CREW Club will be closed as well. Thank you in advance for making arrangements for your students.
Student Report cards will go home with students on October 15th.
Magic Box
Everyday students are feeding the Magic Box their original stories! Keep up the great work CREW…I can’t wait to see which class has the most entries and wins the Mini Magic Box!  The Magic Box will be at Hughes until October 3rd —So keep writing!
Thank you,

Did you know that all classrooms have a morning and closing routine?  These routines are essential to start the day off well and end it on a high note!

We will be encouraging being present and bringing our attendance issues to light.  We want the best for all our students.  Being in school is essential for student success.

Being on time raises their confidence when they enter the classroom for the day.  Being late often causes anxiety and embarrassment.  First bell is at 8:32 am.  Students are late if they are not in their classroom by 8:40am.  If a student is late, the parent or guardian must sign them in or call the school.

You can be the change needed to combat our attendance problems.  Make school a priority.  Make being on time or early a priority.

Attendance affects our school letter grade, student success, student attitude and so much more.

Thank you for teaching your student to be an Attendance HERO!
1)  OMA CLASSES are going well!  Kinders are singing and playing with scarves and rhythm instruments.  First graders are learning a chant about the vowels and 2nd graders have started experimenting with drawing in the style of Joan Miro, a surrealist artist from Spain.
2) In CHOIR we are going to be arranging parts and learning some songs for fall and Halloween!  Mark your calendar for Sat. Oct 26 at 10am.  We will be singing at the 2nd St School Fall Festival. Please check out the GOOGLE link for NEW music to be practicing at home.
3) BAND and ORCHESTRA kiddos!
    a) Keep practicing!!  Turn in completed practice sheets for Kudos! If you are not taking your instrument home, we can arrange for them to practice Wed/Thurs/Fri mornings.
     b) Thank you SO much to those of you who rented/ or own instruments that your child can use.  This allowed everyone to have their own instrument to take home and practice! Thank you so much!
IF YOUR CHILD HAS A RENTED or OWNED INSTRUMENT: They need to be bringing them to band (every Wed/Fri) or orchestra (every Tues/Thurs)  Thank you again!
c) Did you know I keep track of the classes that have no missing instruments? Keep bringing them, you are all doing amazing!!
 4) RECORDER kiddos!
Recorders (as you well know😉) have gone home for practicing! Exciting times!  I do keep track of (and reward) students who remember to bring their recorders and folders to class every Wed!  Please Encourage your child to practice - just 10 minutes in the beginning (3-5 times a week) is actually a great start.  Anything more than that is excellent!  Your child can use my practice sheet or one they have made up themselves.  They do need your signature to get the KUDOS.
Thank you,
Sara Gascho
Did you know this is our major Fall Fundraiser?

All funds raised go back to the school via programs, teacher and staff support, field trips, supplies, events and more!

Your continued support allows us to steer clear of  'buy candy, candles, magazines, this or that' types of fundraisers.  Thank you for your support of our amazing school!  You help make the difference.

Community School Registration Recap

We had very high turnout at the Community School registration event last Thursday morning. We have now filled all but one of the classes. Xeriscaping with Mr. Rodarte still has two spaces left. Xeriscaping is desert gardening emphasizing water conservation. If you have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grader who would like to take Xeriscaping, please email
In total, we filled 246 of 248 available spots. Fifteen of our 18 classes have waitlists and some of those waitlists have 25+ people on them. We enrolled 144 individual students or 38% of the school. We blew our enrollment and revenue targets out of the water. (!)

Above is a chart showing the number of kids enrolled in each subject (blue) and the number of kids on the waitlist for each subject (orange). You can see we have a ton of interest in Spanish, robotics, art and cooking. We are hoping to get permission from TUSD to hire more instructors to handle demand. These approvals take time. We'll have to see what happens.

For those of you who enrolled, you may have received some odd emails from a program called Kinderlime. This is the program that TUSD uses to manage payments for Community School. If you paid in full at registration with cash or a check, please disregard these emails. You do not have an outstanding bill. You do not have to do anything. You do not have to download an app. These emails are generated automatically by the system. We have let the district know that these emails can be confusing to parents and they are working to correct the issue.

Please note that Community School classes start on Thursday, October 17. Next week, we will be sending you your child's schedule with room numbers in the red folder. If you have forgotten exactly which classes you signed up for, this will help remind you.

We are hoping to offer two Community School sessions in the spring, one running from January to March and a second one from March to May. We will have more information on these sessions later in the fall.

Thanks for everyone who came out Thursday and braved the line. We are going to be changing the way we do things to focus more on speed to get everyone in and out as quickly as possible. Many folks asked why we don't do online registration. The short answer is that the district doesn't have software to do it. For the long answer, email me!
