Hello Sam Hughes CREW Families!
 
Welcome to Week 7 of the 20-21 school year! Can you believe we are already rounding the corner towards the end of the 1st Quarter? Thank you for your continuous support and partnership as we navigate the 20-21 school year.
 
Upcoming Dates:
 
September 22

  • TUSD Governing Board Meeting at 5:30pm- The proposal for the Hybrid Instructional Model will be presented and voted on. Please stay tuned for more details and updates after the Board’s decision.

Quarter 1 Benchmark Assessments
 
Starting on Monday, September 21st, the Quarter 1 Benchmark Assessment window will open. Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be taking a Math benchmark assessment on SchoolCity (an online assessment platform). Students in grades second through fifth will be taking an English Language Arts benchmark assessment on Benchmark Universe (an online assessment platform that is correlated with our ELA curriculum Benchmark Advance).
 
Classroom teachers will be communicating the dates they will be facilitating these assessments. Thank you in advance for partnering with us in this journey! Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions.
 
Attendance
Please contact your child’s teacher directly to report any student absences. They will be able to work with you to coordinate assignments and learning activities will be occurring on the day that your child is out. Communicating with the teacher is especially crucial if you are experiencing technical difficulties or if your child needed to take a break from the class zoom. We are committed to working collaboratively in order to best serve your child while complying with district and state expectations. Your child’s teacher is the key point of contact for this on-going communication. Thank you so much for being such a responsive and involved community! I know together our CREW can make Pandemic School a success!

Students directly support Stories that Soar! by creating original artwork that is then showcased on a variety of products for purchase. Artwork purchasing will be available at a later date. HOW TO SUBMIT ARTWORK FOR DISPLAY MY ART Fundraiser:

1. Art needs to be as square as possible (8.5 inch). (Use the printed template OR follow Ms. G's video instructions HERE: for how to make the square)

2. In the top blank area of the paper please write: Students FULL name // Teacher // Grade // Hughes


3. When artwork is complete: Photo or scan art work and email it to info@samhugheselementary.org
Include in the email along with the scan or pic: Students Full Name // Teacher // Grade
***NOTE: AFTER YOU SUBMIT your art, you will receive info on how to order the products you want with your art on it. View product store at: https://displaymyart.com/product-page/ (You cannot order your child’s art until AFTER you submit his/her work.) 😊

4. Anyone can submit artwork! Regardless of age or what school they attend. Please submit it in the same way as above. (Use the template, scan, and email; Include the name and classroom teacher of your enrolled Hughes’ child on the form so we know who to contact.)

5. Do you have to submit the art we did in class? No. Any artwork can be submitted as above.

Hello Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for supporting your child’s (children’s) education in new ways during these challenging times. We are here to help too. Stories that Soar! believes that learning should include creativity, imagination, and joy—the exact things that inspire kids to engage. For many students, Stories that Soar! and the Magic Box Family are familiar friends. They know they can write about anything at all for the Magic Box. They also look forward to seeing which stories will be produced and shared with the school community and beyond! The following information will help YOU help your child/children participate.

Magic Box stories are not graded, but they do help kids practice writing skills without the pressure of “getting it wrong”

· If your child needs help writing, that is fine, but please make sure the words and ideas come from the child
· We respect your child’s privacy and will only list their first name and the name of their teacher if their story is selected for presentation
 
Stories that Soar! Week
Your student’s school will get its very own original show using stories they wrote. During STS! Week, you will receive one episode a day. Episodes run 10-15 minutes and contain 3-4 stories.
Feedback allows students to engage in reflection, recall, and critical thinking. We count on YOU to help encourage this important step.
After STS! Week, stories will become public on our YouTube channel for easy sharing

This year the Site Council will need three new parent members, as a few graduated with their 5th graders last year.

Being a part of Site  Council is an excellent way to be part of the informative and decision-making processes at the school, and parent members provide a voice for all the other parents.  Holding a seat is an excellent way to support our community.

The seat is a two-year commitment.  That said, parents of 5th graders certainly are welcome to join as well.  

One commitment to bear in mind is the taking of minutes.  This is a parent-held responsibility, so it is helpful if you have a laptop and feel comfortable typing the minutes.  (They do not have to be perfect; they can be cleaned up later, and aren't "due" for 72 hours.)

We generally meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 4:00 until about 5:00.  Some meetings, (the budget meeting, for example), may go longer.

Our next meeting is in October, and we don't have a December meeting.  We post notice of all meetings in advance--all are welcome.  For now, meeting will be held via ZOOM.

If you are interested in joining Site Council, please contact Ms. Barry, as she is our Facilitator this year.  Or me, as I facilitated last year and am helping her with the transition.
