President's Message

Jazz Up the Garden was a wonderful event for Friends of Chatham, thanks to the hard work of Patsy Thompson and her amazing committee. The generosity of some many people, who donated items for the auction, raffle, and many others items helped make this a great success. Also thanks to Nancy Gasparovic who graciously hosted the event at her home, which has a beautiful view of our beloved Chatham. Special thanks to actress Sally Struthers who acted as our auctioneer on Saturday and then participated in a Q & A at Riverside on Sunday.

We have extended our Friends Agreement with the National Park Service. We continue to work with the superintendent to provide funding for various projects at Chatham and in the gardens. The Pan Temple is our most recent project, which was completed at the end of September with help from our long time partners, The Rotary and Rappahannock Garden Club. We will be announcing plans for our next projects soon.

Our various committees continue to work hard to make Friends of Chatham successful. Patsy Thompson is working with a special committee to create an endowment fund for Friends of Chatham. The Membership Committee continues to plan Member Mingles. We have received another Grant from Stafford County and will be sharing more about this soon.

Thank you for continuing to support Friends of Chatham. I hope to see you at Riverside on October 26th for On Golden Pond. There will also be a Member Mingle in November at Renato’s. I hope to see many of you at these events.

Jazz Up the Garden Event
As this article is being written, the final tally for the proceeds from the Jazz Up the Garden event held on September 30th at Nancy Gasparovic's home on Sophia Street in Fredericksburg with its fabulous view of Chatham Manor across the Rappahannock are still being tallied.  The evening was perfect, the music festive, the food delicious, and our visit back to the 20s with many attendees dressed in 20s-inspired attire was a great success!
Thank you to Patsy Thompson for chairing the event which will benefit the Liz Thompson Memorial Fund for Chatham Gardens and Grounds and to special guest and auctioneer, Sally Struthers, and to the many sponsors, donors and volunteers who made the evening a night to remember.

Pan Cupola &
Ceres Repair Project
Scott McKee, the sculptor who put Pan back together in 2013, completed another project for Friends of Chatham and our partners, The Rappahannock Valley Garden Club, the Rappahannock Fredericksburg Rotary Club and the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund of the Community Foundation. This time the focus was on the cupola in which Pan rests and some needed repair to the Ceres statue at the entrance to the formal gardens. It took several weeks to complete, but the before and after photos attest to the value of Scott's skilled workmanship.

From the Garden

Hope that you made it out to the garden at Chatham sometime during the summer. The new beds of annuals near the summer house added color and cheer to the landscape while the parterre beds with their boxwood borders were as beautiful as ever. If you have not yet come to visit, no reason for regret- the Autumn show has begun and new beauties await. The parterre beds have been refreshed with pansies. In the main beds, the impressive stands of Asters add their beautiful colors, complemented by the aptly named ‘Autumn Joy’ sedum. The new season provides another great reason to visit the garden.

As the autumn garden tasks continue at Chatham, we will be planting tulip bulbs to provide beautiful color again next spring. If you are thinking of planting bulbs in your own garden this fall, you can help Friends of Chatham at the same time. Just search online for Bloomin Bucks with Brent and Becky’s Bulbs. From the dropdown list of organizations choose Friends of Chatham to support. When you click agree, you will be sent on to Brent and Becky’s catalog of products where you can place your order. You will pay the normal price and Friends of Chatham will receive 25% of that price. You will get good products and help Friends of Chatham- a real win/win.
