The event will begin at 6:00 pm with a cash bar. Dinner will be served at 6:45 pm and we expect the evening to be over by 9:00 pm. Cost is $40 per person for a buffet dinner including house salad, 2 entrees (Chicken Marsala and Trout with almonds) mashed potatoes,  vegetable and dessert. President's Message

Happy 2019!

I can’t wait to see what success this year has in store for the Friends of Chatham. Each year has had its own success story. The return of Diana to the Chatham Garden will be part of this year’s success story.

I would like to thank Cathy Walker and her team of Volunteers who decorated Chatham so beautifully for the holiday season. It was a first for the Friends to do this and I am sure it will become an annual tradition. It was sad that the Civil War Santa event had to be cancelled due to weather, but would like to thank all those who had volunteered to help that day.

We had a wonderful time at Riverside in November for Beauty and the Beast. Thanks for your support of these events. We had a good turn out for our November Member Mingle at Renato’s. Thank you Patsy Thompson and Cathy Walker for organizing these events for the membership.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the January Member Mingle at Keystone and the dinner at Brock’s at the end of January.

Until the next time,

From the Garden

We had a beautiful autumn in the garden, with the Asters presenting a glorious show of colors. Our gardener, Scott Blake, and the volunteers removed the spent summer annuals from the parterre beds and replaced them with pansies. We also created a new flower bed outside the brick wall on the kitchen side of the house. This is an area where we have stored flats of annuals before moving them into the garden for planting. After each of these episodes, National Park Service personnel would comment on how much they enjoyed seeing the flowers there. Now there will be a planted bed there throughout the growing season. The initial planting is pansies in a colorful geometric pattern Scott designed- a cheerful sight to greet our NPS partners and visitors as they enter from the side parking lot.

The normal schedule to get the garden all cleaned up, mulched and put to bed before the end of the year encountered a number of roadblocks this year. First, of course, were the schedule disruptions throughout the summer caused by the record setting rainfall. Then, just to show her versatility, Mother Nature forced cancellation of one volunteer Wednesday in December by spreading a blanket of snow over the beds scheduled for mulching. Manmade obstacles took over in late December, as NPS was caught in the lapse of appropriations preventing anyone except law enforcement personnel from working in the Park. So some work remains to be tackled in early 2019, as the forces of man and nature permit, before we get to the wonders of another spring in the garden.
