Thank you to everyone who submitted abstracts for our upcoming International Congress. The quantity and quality of submissions received was very high.  Sixty five global experts assisted us with providing 2 reviews for each abstract.  All author information was hidden from the reviewers who graded abstracts on a scale of 1 to 5 in four categories: technical merit, readability, innovation in the field of child abuse and neglect prevention, and data supported methodology. Each category was weighted equally and scores were averaged to determine results.  The double-blind review process was, as a result, highly competitive, and acceptance came down to two distinguishing factors: if the abstract included new and sufficient data and whether it showcased innovative practices that advance the learning in the field of child abuse and neglect.  
NEW MODULES of our online Child Maltreatment Evaluation and Treatment Curriculum have been added to or updated with the latest in practice and research by leading CAN experts. These include an updated Neglect module by Howard Dubowitz of the University of Maryland; expanded Human Trafficking modules that include Child Sex Trafficking by newly elected ISPCAN Councilor Dr. Jordan Greenbaum of the Stephanie Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta; and an expanded section on Physical Abuse including 14 new presentations by Dr. Resmiye Oral of the University of Iowa.  The Child Maltreatment Evaluation and Treatment Curriculum is free for members  and was designed to provide an in-depth introduction to skills that medical professionals and others need to provide diagnosis, medical treatment, and advocacy for children who have been abused and neglected. ABSTRACTS OPEN for ISPCAN's first-ever Caribbean Regional Conference, to be held December 2-5, 2018 in Montego Bay at the all inclusive Hilton Rose Hall resort.  We are now accepting abstracts related to the conference theme, Child Protection Realities within a Changing Caribbean.  Sessions will focus on:
  • Juvenile justice
  • Innovative therapy and support
  • Human trafficking and sex tourism
  • Public health prevention campaigns
  • Impact of child abuse and violence on development
  • Systems of professionalism and accountability within the Child Protection sector

ISPCAN MONTHLY WEBINAR will be held on May 24, and is presented by Dusica Popadic of Incest Trauma Center, an ISPCAN Country Partner in Belgrade, Serbia.  The focus of the webinar will be to highlight the challenges of those who are working to safeguard children, including social context, the "backlash effect," and discrimination against those who speak out against child abuse, particularly self-organizing women in certain cultures. Ms. Popadic will discuss mitigation strategies that result from the analysis of social context and the strength and commitment of professionals working in the field today. The webinar is FREE for ISPCAN members and $20 for non-members. Register here.
IN MEMORIAM Former ISPCAN Councilor and Treasurer, Alison Davis, passed away in Sydney, Australia, on April 6 at the age of 79. Here's a remembrance by former ISPCAN President Kim Oates:  "In 1984, the Australian Council of Social Welfare Ministers made a bid for ISPCAN to hold its 6th International Congress in Sydney in 1986, the first time a bid had come from the Southern Hemisphere. The bid was successful, and I served as Congress Chair while the Council of Social Welfare ministers gave Alison full-time appointment as Congress Secretary.  Alison did the lion’s share of the work in organizing what was widely regarded as an extremely successful event, with 1,674 delegates from 36 countries.  She was good at convincing people in high places to get on board, and our organizing committee had senior welfare and health leaders from around Australia as well as the NSW Police Commissioner. She seemed to be able to liaise with almost every delegate--and was an excellent problem solver.  After the Sydney Congress, Alison was elected to the ISPCAN Council, later serving as treasurer. This was in the days when ISPCAN had no paid staff and was working out of the office of NCPCA in Chicago.  In 1998, the Australian government honored Alison's achievements in child welfare by awarding her the Medal of the Order of Australia."

REDUCE YOUR STRESS. One of the most effective tools is one that we all have access to every day doesn't cost us a dime.  It's expressing gratitude. Gratitude benefits our not only our mental and physical health but also our relationships, self esteem, and empathy--and one of the easiest ways to start is by keeping a gratitude journal or taking a moment every day to close our eyes and feel gratitude.   Find a quiet moment: the format is up to you--you can take 5 minutes to be silent and reflect, any time of day when you need a break.   Be consistent: you should take a quiet moment to reflect or write in your journal every day. Name at least three:  list or write a small paragraph about three things you are grateful for every day. And don't repeat items from the day before--the key is to get in the habit of becoming aware of all the little things you have to be grateful for that we take for granted.  We can balance out the negative thoughts with the positive.
