Youth Commission Newsletter - Spring 2017

It’s been a busy first quarter as CEO for me. I have had a very warm welcome from families and professionals across the community - thank you all for your generosity, time and many, many cups of coffee.

There have been some great moments looking back at this quarter. I have watched my office slowly fill with paper and willow lantern creations over the past few weeks, peaking with a collection produced during our half term residential on Sark.

I was lucky enough to join some of our young people on one of the drumming workshops where I learned it is quite difficult to play a Panderio (small Brazilian tambourine) with a group of young people and leave them under the illusion that you are in any way an authority figure!
Thank you and well done to our colleagues in the Arts Commission for hosting the Lantern Parade. It was great working with you and, despite the high winds, it was heart-warming to see so many organisations, families and young people taking part in your beautiful event.

Looking forward, we begin two exciting  partnerships with Airtel Vodafone, delivering internet safety in schools, and Action For Children, delivering Drug and Alcohol Services (DAS) in Alderney. These are two areas of work that the team feel really passionate about and we’re very pleased to be working with these two organisations to launch these projects. For more information please contact Emma Backhouse regarding internet safety, and Cleo Thomas regarding DAS work in Alderney.

This first edition of our newsletter is filled with some of the fantastic projects that are currently in development at the Youth Commission. I hope that you will feel as inspired as I do at the range of opportunities on offer over the coming weeks, please get in touch and take part.

Best wishes,

PS. I hope future newsletters will share the work that we all do in organisations that support children and young people so please get in touch if you have news or upcoming events you would like included in future editions.
