The Current: Welcoming 2021

Ella Chen, Editor-in-Chief of The Triton

It feels like a year since I last reached out to you...and what’s crazy is that it technically has been! I hope that you were able to welcome 2021 in the comfort of your home and that even in quarantine, you were able to find rest and joy during the holidays.

In this edition of The Current, I will be briefing you with The Triton updates on recruitment and what to look out for in the coming quarter. Even though we are already three weeks into Winter Quarter, there’s still no telling what surprises the next two months have in store for us! This week, we inaugurate a new president and kick off four years of a new administration. The COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna have also been slated to ramp up distribution in the coming weeks. So many changes are coming, but we promise you that The Triton will be a constant in providing you consistent and accurate coverage as the quarter continues to unfold.

With that being said, this is also my last quarter as the Editor-in-Chief of The Triton. As I wrap up my time in the paper, I will be reviewing my personal and organizational goals to pass on to my predecessors. After this quarter, The Current will also be passing into new hands, and I look forward to reading it from the other side -- as a reader and not the writer. If you have any suggestions or if there’s any content you’d like to see in future editions, please do not hesitate to reach out. We love hearing your feedback!

If you ever want to reach me and chat, I am still holding Quarterly Office Hours on Zoom. You can find the link here: I’ll be here every Thursday this quarter from 3-4 p.m, except this week, which will happen from 3:30-4:30 p.m. You can also reach me at any time through my email, which is In the meantime, I hope you continue to stay updated with The Triton, because you help keep us afloat! Take care until next time.

Always investigating,

Ella Chen

As our staff transitions into this quarter and starts to pick up news tips, here’s some potential articles to look forward to in the coming weeks:

  • As part of its Return to Learn program, UCSD has introduced COVID-19 test vending machines on campus. Students and staff can access these vending machines located around campus and self-test themselves before dropping off their sample in the designated boxes. Test results are generally available within 48 hours.

  • UCSD has also announced that it will mostly be offering in-person instruction in Fall Quarter 2021.

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom struck down the tuition increase proposal from the University of California system.

  • The Sauce is set to begin publishing every three weeks this quarter. Arts and Culture Assistant Editor Kiyahna Brown has been hard at work on her column and we’re excited to publish Winter Quarter’s first piece soon!

  • Ellamentally Yours is also set to publish its fourth installment this week in Setting Boundaries With Others and the Self. The fifth piece will be coming soon after!

  • According to our section leads from Arts and Culture and Photo, a fashion spread has been in the works, and we can’t wait to show you the quarantine outfits we’ve gathered!

Even though it’s hard to stay connected during the pandemic, community groups and resource centers on campus are still hosting events virtually. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • APIMEDA Community Forum: Weekly on Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m.

    • This is a safe space for students of Asian/Pacific Islander/Middle Eastern backgrounds to discuss issues such as family, stigmas, and culture.

  • Latinx/Chicanx Cafecito Hour: Weekly on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

    • A collective to discuss Latinx/Chicanx health and how to tackle success in academics and in the world

  • WISE: Graduate Women in Science and Engineering: Weekly on Wednesdays from 1-2 p.m.

    • This is a support space for women in fields that are under-represented, particularly in graduate programs of science and engineering.

  • Relaxation Skills: Weekly on Thursdays from 3-4 p.m.

    • Led by Dr. Scott Hansen from Counseling and Psychological Services, this is a place to learn practical skills and exercises to deal with daily anxiety.

Our Events

If you’re looking to get involved in journalism, writing, administrative tasks, and media, The Triton might just be the perfect fit for you! We’re still recruiting folks to join our sections this quarter, so come to any of our recruitment events to get to know more about us! You don’t need to have any experience to join.

    • We hold a quarterly Ask Me Anything on UCSD’s subreddit. Our editors and current staff members answer your questions about what it’s like to be a student journalist, how we balance our school with writing, and anything else you’re interested in!

    • Hop on over to r/UCSD this week today, Thursday, 1/21 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Post your questions and we’ll try to answer them as soon as we can.

  • We’re doing something a little differently this quarter. Instead of hosting a separate info session at night like we usually do, I will be hosting a facebook live so that our general information sessions can be accessible to the public during daylight hours. During the live, feel free to pop in and ask any questions you have about being a part of our team.

  • The Facebook Live will be on today, 1/21 from 3 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. I will be posting the link to my Office Hours at the end and heading there right after, so if you’d like to speak to me face to face, you’re more than welcome to join me post Facebook Live! We hope to see you there!
