From the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop led by the legendary Stephen Schwartz and four new productions of original Canadian musicals to the Writers Room and The House of Martin Guerre in Concert––the Canadian musical theatre scene is thriving. CMTWC Writers Workshop Showcase

Come to a free concert of brand new musical theatre songs written by the class of the first ever CMTWC Writers Workshop! Not sure if the workshop is right for you? Come to the showcase and see what we do!

The showcase is Monday, April 3rd from 7-9PM at Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts (736 Bathurst St, Toronto, ON), room 210. It features the works of: Trevor Barker, Deanna Choi, Trevor Curran, Richard Lam, Jaemoon Lee, Colin Simmons, Heidi Stock, Steven Taetz, Allison Wither, and Angela Wong. A cast of top Toronto performers will present the work. The CMTWC Writers Workshop is Canada’s premier training program for emerging musical theatre writers. In this unique course, the only one of its kind in Canada, participants learn the craft of musical theatre songwriting. The course is taught by renowned Canadian musical theatre artist Leslie Arden, and a rotating faculty of other high profile guests, including Jim Betts, David Warrack, Neil Bartram, Daniel Maté, Jonathan Monro, Landon Braverman, and Joseph Trefler.

CMTWC member Jim Betts will be coming out of performance retirement to do a concert of his songs at The Jazz Bistro the evening of April 23. Joining him will be a number of special guests –– including Stephen Woodjetts on piano, Bob Hewus on bass, and Charlotte Moore. Stay tuned for more details! 

The House of Martin Guerre in Concert

Jim is also part of a team that will be producing a major concert performance of Leslie Arden’s The House Of Martin Guerre, at The Bluma Appel Theatre November 23 to 25, 2017. It will feature a full cast (20-30 performers) and an orchestra (15-20). Stay tuned for more information!

ASCAP Workshop in Toronto led by Stephen Schwartz

In association with ASCAP, we will be presenting the first ever Canadian edition of the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop in Toronto this May. Led by the legendary composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz (WickedGodspellEnchanted), the workshop will allow participants the opportunity to present selections from works in progress, and receive professional critique.

Applications are now open to writers across Canada! All submissions are due on March 10. For information about submission requirements and more, please read the full announcement here.

CMTWC Writers Room

Submissions are now open for the first CMTWC WRITERS ROOM on Monday, March 20. The WRITERS ROOM is a regular bi-monthly place for advanced writers to present their works in progress while receiving feedback from their peers and a special guest moderator. 

The March 20 session will be from 7:30-9:30pm at Randolph Academy. The guest moderators are Mitchell Marcus (Musical Stage Co.) and David Warrack (Award-winning composer and conductor).

"Newfoundland Mary," a new musical by Peter Fenton & CMTWC member Scott White, will see production as part of the Lunchbox Theatre season. It runs April 8 to May 13 in Calgary.  For more information visit their website
"Riverview High: The Musical" received its US Premiere at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee on February 19 and 20, 2017, presented by the Earthstone Theatre Company. Written by CMTWC members Angela Wong, Stewart Yu and Mike Mackenzie, the show premiered at the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival to sold out houses and holds the record for the highest selling show in Vancouver Fringe history. It also won the Ovation! Award for Outstanding Community Production, Small Theatre in 2012.
Calgary's Forte Musical Theatre Guild is partnering with Downstage to present the world premiere of “Crime Does Not Pay”, a new musical by CMTWC member David Rhymer and Kris Demeanor. David and Kris have spun a true story into a brand new musical. Bob Wood arrives in the big city in the late 1940s with a sketchbook full of comics about how the little guy always gets pushed into the dirt by corporations and politicians. But when Bob falls for the wrong girl inspiration strikes! The show runs March 2 to 11 at the Engineered Air Theatre, Arts Commons.
StoryBook Theatre is presenting the world premiere of CMTWC member Joe Slabe’s new musical “The Urban Jungle Book”. Joe’s musical “Crossing Swords” won five awards at the 2013 NYMF including Best Book and the Theater for the American Musical prize. “The Urban Jungle Book” is a modern take on the Rudyard Kipling stories and uses pop, rock, and rap music to tell them in a way you’ve never heard (or seen) before! The show runs March 3 to 18 at the Beddington Heights Community Arts Centre.
