Dear Friends,

The only thing more exciting than finding your favorite fruit or healthy snack in a Locker Project bag is finding a new book! Throughout the month of March, we've been working with the United Way of Greater Portland's Brick & Beam Society to add books to 1,100 bags of staples heading out to our preschool and elementary school sites. Thanks to the United Way, CMP, and the Avangrid Foundation for supporting this project!

New Site in South Portland

In mid-February, we learned that 40+ families with children enrolled in South Portland schools are living in motels up the road from our office, with limited or no access to kitchens.

The school district set up a new meals site, and we're providing these families with healthy foods they can easily store and prepare.

Our new aqua bag, shared with families every Wednesday, holds about 15 pounds of fruit, shelf-stable milk, instant oatmeal, microwaveable meals, peanut butter, and more.

We're collecting non-perishables so we can send extra food home with kids across Greater Portland before the April school break. Read on to find out how you can help! #feedingthefuture

The Locker Project Team

April Food Drive

Neighbors, friends, churches, and workplaces can help us collect the kid-friendly foods we need for families to stay nourished over the April school break. We are collecting food for the South Portland, Portland, and Westbrook schools April 5-8. Drop off in Scarborough or send us a note, and we'll pick it up.
In February and March, community partners Starbucks at Maine Crossing in South Portland and members of the Friday morning Portland Chamber LINQ Networking group gathered hundreds of pounds of healthy food for children and families at risk of hunger. Thank you!

Shout-out to Our Partners!

It's finally spring, and we're dreaming of warm days when we can set up our tables and share healthy food with our neighbors outside. Starting in June, we'll be teaming up with our partners to bring fresh produce right to families in their neighborhoods. In the meantime, we're working to make sure every child in Greater Portland has access to nutritious foods at home.
In the month of February alone, we rescued more than 17,000 pounds of fresh food from our partners at Hannaford, Shaw's, Sam's Club, Rosemont, Lois' Natural, and Standard Baking Co. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, we packed and shared more than 2,500 green produce and purple staples bags

Partner Spotlight: Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine

Every Wednesday afternoon, like clockwork, volunteer Lynn Thurston loads up her van with 30 green bags of fresh produce for children at the local Boys & Girls Clubs. The Portland and South Portland clubs provide children from Kindergarten to grade 5 with meals and a COVID-safe space to complete their remote learning and have some fun.
In 2020, we shared more than 8,200 pounds of healthy food at the clubs. Shout-out to the South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club for helping to support this partnership!
