As 2020 comes to a close...

Dear Friends,

The past few months have brought unexpected challenges to organizations everywhere, and the Locker Project is no expection. With hunger rising in Maine, we had to find ways to share even more healthy food with more people in need, without our school pantries. By quickly forging new partnerships and securing new resources, we roughly doubled the size of our program. We’ve shared more than 15,000 bags of produce and healthy staples with children and families at risk of hunger!

By the end of the year, partnering with 28 Greater Portland public schools, seven Head Starts, and several neighborhood sites, we will have shared more than 400,000 pounds of healthy food with our neighbors in need, including 160,000 pounds of fresh food rescued from local markets.

One Head Start family advocate told us, “Our families have young children and don’t feel safe waiting in crowded lines at various pantries. The extra food has made a real difference.”

The Locker Project relies on the generosity of this amazing community to fund our programs. Can you help? A donation of $100 provides bags for 20+ students to take home to share with their families. We thank you for any support you're able to provide.

Wishing you peace and good health in the year ahead,

The Locker Project Team

Holiday Food Drives

We're excited to be able to accept food drives again! Neighbors, friends, churches, workplaces--it's time to set up a bin and help us collect the items we need for kids to stay nourished over the holidays. We ask that event organizers share our current list of needed items and observe COVID-19 protocols: Items should be newly purchased and collected with care.
Here are the items we are sharing with children and families:

  • Kid-friendly soup
  • Pop-top cans of ravioli and spaghetti-o’s and microwaveable meals
  • Canned chicken and tuna
  • Plain pasta and pasta sauce in cans (please, no glass)
  • Rice (box or bag)
  • Canned beans
  • Peanut butter (small or medium jars, please, no glass)
  • Single-serving cereal, oatmeal, pretzels, cheez-its, goldfish, granola bars, fruit cups

Volunteer Spotlight

Karin and Allen Belsheim moved to Portland six years ago and learned about the Locker Project through Garbage to Garden. Karin loves sharing recipes with students at our fresh food events. Since the school year began, she and Allen have been coming each week to pack purple bags of staples. Their single-day packing record (so far) is 100 bags. Thank you, Karin and Allen!
