Protecting Your Lake

Bitter, Burdock, Little Redstone, Pelaw and Redstone

Winter Greetings from Redstone

We woke up this morning to find 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground and in the trees - absolutely magnificent.

Sir Sam's has been making snow for the last two weeks and the sledders are already talking about a great season.

Burdock, Bitter and Pelaw have had some freezing around the shoreline but it will be several weeks until it freezes over.

The water levels are normally down at this time of year but very little difference on a historical basis.

New for Spring/Summer 2017

We are going to be installing RLCA signs on County Road #7(Kennisis Lake Road) and County Road 14 (Haliburton Lake Road) to highlight activities and on going challenges on our lakes.

Your board of directors have been meeting once per month to initiate new programs and resolve issues relating to water quality. We would welcome your input and your participation on the Board of Directors.  New board members are important to keeping the Board contemporary and strategic.

Come to Haliburton and enjoy the winter. It is fantastic!
Have a great winter and look forward to a super 2017.

Best Regards,
Mike Johnson
President RLCA

Road Clean-up

In September, Mike and I from RLCA Executive joined the Kennisis Lake Cottage Owners' Association (KLCOA) “Adopt a Road” campaign to pick up the garbage along Kennisis Lake Road. The effort was very successful. Mike and I alone collected close to 4 large garbage bags full of garbage and recyclables from our 400 meter stretch of road. Members from KLCOA worked other stretches of road. Next year we hope that RLCA Members will join us so that we can cleanup other roads servicing our cottages. Campaign usually runs for 3 hours on a Saturday morning.

Lake Water Quality Testing

Currently we have 3 testers; Barb Danko on Big and Little Redstone Lakes, Richard Luger on Bitter Lake and Laurie and Greg Kerr on Burdock Lake. Water is tested for clarity, phosphorus, acidity (pH) and this coming year for invasive species. The test results are presented at our Annual General Meeting in July. Testing is done every other week in the summer. If you are interested in becoming involved in water testing particularly in the Pelaw Lake or Little Redstone, let me know.

Coalition for Equitable Water Flow

The Coalition of Equitable Water Flow has been monitoring reservoir and flow-through lake water levels and regional precipitation amounts closely throughout 2016.  Their most recent website posting was a November 17th TSW Water Management Update along with their commentary.

Membership Drive

Our 2016 door-to-door Membership Drive was a success!  We attracted 37 new members and welcomed back 27 members who hadn't paid in a few years or more.  We currently have 229 members paid for 2016 and that number continues to rise as memories are jogged by our reminder email :)  Our membership year runs from July 1st to June 30th. There are still 50 or so members from 2015 who are on our "pending" list.

Thanks to all who participated in the 2016 Drive.  Hopefully we will be as successful in 2017!
