SERIAL MARKETER WEEKLY
Issue 97: A Grand Milestone for Serial Marketers
From Serial Marketer: "The Cutting Edge of Marketing”
serialmarketer.net
--------------------------------------------------

Serial Marketers, the community I founded in July 2018, passed the 1,000-member milestone several days ago.

The round number feels good. Growth is validating, especially when I see that people are posting more than 500 messages weekly as posts and private messages, and the participation keeps increasing.

Here’s what matters a lot more than any number though:

The community is where people Learn, Try, and Share. That was the motto from day one, when I asked an Indonesian Fiverr designer (username: bangbend) to put that on a university crest. Experiential learning has been the foundation of everything I’ve done professionally – and personally. There’s a big cohort of people like that, and these are the members who have made this community what it is.

Members support one another. These are such good people who are constantly working with each other, sourcing recommendations, and lifting each other up. I usually find out about these kinds of connections anecdotally. For a bunch of marketers, it’s a surprisingly modest group.

It doesn’t matter if you call yourself a marketer. The biggest misconception people have about the community is that it’s only for marketers. If you want to learn about marketing and share what you know, this is the place for you. I don’t care if you’re a ballet dancer or a blacksmith. Conversely, if you’re not into learning from others and sharing what you know, you could be a lifelong marketer and a terrible fit for the group. The same goes for jerks or tireless self-promoters, but we’ve barely had any of either join us yet.

My favorite channel in the community? #selfpromo. It’s how I learn a ton about what members are up to. And it’s a safe space where people can always share what they’re doing without anyone worried about spamming the group. Beyond the intros shared in the #lounge, #selfpromo is a reliable way to get to know people better. I hope members use it even more.

It’s hard to predict the catalysts. Most of the people who carried the torch early on and made the community what it is were people I hardly knew. None of the four people who are on the advisory board are those I would have expected to contribute as much as they have: Orli LeWinter, Peggy Anne Salz, Jess Wilkeyson, and Weston Woodward. So many others have contributed in ways few realize. But all of it has an impact on others there. As the community grows, I'll need even more such support.

What do the next 1,000 members look like? Some wonder how much bigger the group can get while still feeling like a community of people who are there for each other. I think there are thousands, even potentially tens of thousands, of people who fit this mold and who can build on the diversity of demographics and experience that’s already there. That will also mean more people who can contribute ideas, jobs, events, and opinions and add to the fabric of the community.

So, what’s ahead?

A lot.

We just launched a blog to showcase the thought leadership of members of the community.

We’ll continue with the Serial Marketer Salons weekly video chats; there’s a new Meetup group just for Serial Marketers members to make it easier to receive updates on upcoming speakers.

We’re exploring a learning portal – with the working title “Serial Marketers Academy” – so members can share their training, and of course get paid for it.

We’re lining up exclusive perks for the community.

And there are quite a few other ideas on the table.

If any of what you see here is interesting, you should join. If you’re already there and excited, you should be more active. And if you want to contribute in a bigger way, I’d love to talk to you.

There’s so much we can do for each other. There are opportunities we can create for each other. We can have a professional space like this where we can be present for each other.

We are Serial Marketers, more than 1,000 strong now, and we’re just getting warmed up.

Care to join us?

David

DEDICATED TO SERVING YOU DURING THESE TIMES
What's it like doing business development these days? Check out this conversation I had with Julian Newman, the founder of Dedicated.ai. His whole focus is expanding sales teams for agencies and other firms, so I found his take especially relevant. You can also find an update from Dedicated.ai in the Offers section below.

WEAR A MASK: THE PSA COMPETITION
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo launched a competition, run by his daughter Mariah (volunteering, mind you), for the best PSAs promoting why we should wear masks in public. They'll post the best five ads online, open to public voting, and the winning ad will air widely. The governor also noted that if Mariah's boyfriend enters an ad, he will lose.

START SPREADING THE BREWS
I learned about this from Governor Cuomo's daily email: New York is doing virtual happy hours many weekdays at 6:30pm hosted by breweries across the state.

TAKE ME DOWN TO EAT IN ALPHABET CITY
Here's a take at a hyperlocal visualization and search tool: see what businesses are open in NYC's East Village. Better still, you can search by category, and the only category you need to search by is "dessert."

FLAUNT YOUR PPE
Designed by Us has a designer mask marketplace. Buy one mask, and they donate two.

SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK'S #SMWONE - STARTING THIS WEEK

Virtual
One of my favorite annual events is going virtual:
#SMWONE is a month-long virtual conference series taking place May 5-28 that will deliver live content, talks, panel sessions, and workshops, together with on-demand content, product demos, attendee hangouts, and networking experiences. They pivoted both of their NY and LA conferences into a single event and adding double the programming.
Confirmed #SMWONE speakers include Kristin Patrick, CMO of PepsiCo, Rishad Tobaccowala, Chief Growth Officer at Publicis Groupe, Pam Wasserstein, President of Vox Media, Rishi Magia, Creative Strategist at Instagram, Dara Treseder, CMO of Carbon 3D, and Joe Marchese, CEO of Attention Capital.
A Delegate Pass Pass allows access to 100+ hours of sessions with 300+ speakers. Through my link, you can get 20% off:

From my friends at Crowdsourcing Week, here's a free virtual all-day event: "The Virtual Crowd Summit, a 1-day online web conference covers actionable topics in crowdsourcing, open innovation, collaborative economy and crowdfunding that are increasingly rewriting the rules in every sector now more than ever. Whether crowdsourcing is a term that’s sparked your curiosity or a practice you use every day at work,"

The previously-Chicago-only event is now virtual and coming up soon. I'll be speaking about how to build and run a successful B2B community. Of course, I will be including examples from many others, with a bit of experience covering mistakes I've made that others can learn from.

I'm working on sourcing more jobs for this. In the meantime, check the resources below, and keep checking out the #jobs channel in Serial Marketers.

TIKTOK
Various product marketing roles
NYC
Via Chris Vennard on LinkedIn: "I have 3 roles open on my team, and a few more in our overall group. All of these roles are leading Go-to-Market strategy and execution around the TikTok ad platform. For my team, I'm looking for very deep & specific experience within programmatic advertising and API, as well as some more general experience across 3rd party marketplaces and Ad Measurement on our larger team."
