SERIAL MARKETER WEEKLY
Issue 19: Angels in the Catacombs
From Serial Marketer: "The Cutting Edge of Marketing”
serialmarketer.net
--------------------------------------------------

One night recently this summer, my wife and I went out to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn to see a concert.

While this may sound like an odd idea for a date night, Green-Wood is an exceptionally beautiful and historic cemetery. Soon after it opened in the mid-19th century, it was the second most popular attraction in the United States (not just New York), bested only by Niagara Falls. It was a fresh, breezy escape from the crowds and smoke and horse manure in the age of concerns of miasma ("bad air") that predated germ theory.

The event was part of a concert series where a creative event organizer discovered the catacombs, normally closed to the public, and saw that they would be a perfect, intimate music venue. We saw a classical piano duet played by the prodigious Naughton sisters, Christina and Michelle. For us, the content was unimportant (though we were grateful to be seated a few yards away from such talent and to watch them practice their craft). The venue itself was the draw - a normally hidden realm within one of our favorite, underappreciated tourist attractions in the country's most popular city for tourists.

As I was watching these angels in the catacombs, turning the likes of Leonard Bernstein compositions into other-worldly odes, it made me appreciate transcendence. If a dank, musty hall of tombs hidden amidst the sprawling hills of Green-Wood can turn into a concert hall, then what else is possible? What vision do you have that no one else could or would? What space, digital or physical or mental or emotional, could change with the right vision and plan?

This is what's inspiring me after this Labor Day. What's inspiring you? And what are you making of yourself?

David

WORK FOR YOUR COMPANY OR WORK FOR YOURSELF?
Sarah Cooper's The Cooper Review is often hysterical. When it's not, it makes you question why you even bother getting out of bed in the morning. These 10 illustrations cover the difference between working in-house and in your house.

BRANDS, WATCH OUT FOR DIRTY INFLUENCERS
In case you didn't realize, there are these people called influencers, and a number of them are pretty terrible and unethical and ruin all the fun for the people trying to earn a living the old-fashioned way, like by opening up boxes of stuff and taking pictures of it. I was impressed enough with this piece by Holly Pavlika at Inmar that I immediately reached out to her and will meet her soon; if such topics are on your mind, let me know.

13 EMAIL DESIGN TIPS
I can't say I follow all the best practices for email design, and I welcome feedback on what I could do better, but this list from Mailchimp has some pretty good pointers like increasing font size and minimizing interactive features.

FEATURED NEWSLETTER: THE EMERGIST
Andrew Hoffman, founder of HYTEN Partners, publishes this weekly newsletter that is full of emerging tech goodness. The most recent edition covered remote working, facial recognition, Apple's autonomous cars, and blockchain (of course). He's great at sourcing some below-the-radar companies and throws out some borderline-plausible new ideas.

WANTED
--------------------------------------------------

Here's are requests people posted lately in Serial Marketers. Even if you don't join the Slack group, email me recommendations, and I will get them to the right people.

DC: Does anyone have a project management tool they love that they think scales well with orgs from small to large? I've been playing with Monday.com, Asana is too complicated, and I like Kanban boards but would prefer a good long-term calendar/timeline view.

SC: Anyone know of a Yahoo sports plugin that works with Slack?  ummmmm, asking for a friend who may or may not play fantasy during work hours!

JH: They're looking to create an internal training platform - eg posting lots of documents and presentations, and having new hires go through the 'coursework' and track their progress. They're early-stage, so major players like Confluence tend to be price-prohibitive.
