  *****AD SPACE NOT FOR SALE *****
The ad space in this newsletter promotes brands that I love. Submit ‘ad’ requests to me and maybe they'll run in the next edition. Note though I’m not taking any money for ads.

WELCOME MESSAGE

* A NEW DIRECTION FOR 2017

It’s been a bit since the previous edition of the Sporadic, largely because of my own new path. In December, I joined marketing technology company Sysomos as their Chief Strategy Officer, so along with ramping up with my job and getting to know their products, I’ve had fun getting to know their team in Toronto, Raleigh, and beyond (though I’ll remain based in New York).

A
for what happens with Serially Sporadic, I’ll keep sharing updates on a semi-regular basis and hope to get a regular cadence going again. If you have articles, research, jobs, or other updates you think may be a fit here, let me know. I’ll also continue to update the Serial Marketer blog, while keeping up contributions to Ad Age, the Sysomos blog, and other outlets.

Thanks for sticking with me on this journey. – David

* READ: WHAT I LEARNED FROM HITTING 250,000 FOLLOWERS ON TWITTER
Travis Wright (@teedubya) is one of those guys I met when we were just babes in digital media, back at the Web 2.0 Expo 10 years ago. His journey is fascinating for anyone who has been part of the ebbs and flows of social media.

* READ: INSIGHTS INTO CREATIVITY FROM REVVED DESIGN’S PAUL STADNYK
Paul is amazing. He's one of the best creative directors I’ve worked with, and now he has his own shop, working on a range of
high-end gigs and passion projects.
Get his take on the creative process in this interview, and bookmark his site for whenever creative needs arise.

* READ: HOW TO BREAK FREE FROM THE 10 PLAGUES OF MARKETING
There are a lot of macro issues that are plaguing marketing right now. It all starts with trust. Based on a talk initially delivered to an event hosted by Israeli VC firm Viola Group, you can read a byline that ran in VentureBeat and an annotated presentation on SlideShare. What else should be on this list of plagues? Maybe the next version will have 20 (I’m no god; I can make edits.)

* READ: GADGETS NEED ACTIVE, NOT PASSIVE, VOICE ACTIVATION
One of the most interesting conversations I had at CES was about the difference between passive voice and active voice when it comes to voice-activated technology like Amazon Echo. This Ad Age column describes the distinction, and why it matters for marketers.

* LISTEN: THE BEANCAST – THE SCREEN THAT’S IN FRONT OF YOU
I joined acclaimed Beancast host Bob Knorpp to discuss a lot of the hot topics in media and marketing, so naturally I’m promoting my own episode, where I’m constantly outsmarted and outmatched by Tom Webster and Joe Jaffe. But really, listen to this every week. Because saying that means Bob will be more likely to invite me back.

* READ: DAVID BERKOWITZ FIRES HIMSELF FROM SERIAL MARKETER
This might technically be a fake press release, but it was real news. I did fire myself from my own firm. I said of my old boss, “He micromanaged everything with me. What a jerk.” Learn more about what it’s like having the boss from hell.

* READ: WHY I’M JOINING SYSOMOS – MY ROAD HERE
Why did I take this role at a marketing tech company? Why a strategy role? I have a little more clarity as to my role now, but this post was more raw, as I wrote it before I knew exactly what I’d be doing there day to day.

* PLAY: POKEMON DUEL
I’m not hearing much buzz about Pokemon Duel, but I think this is the better Pokemon mobile game. While overly cutesy in some places, it’s a clever board game, and one where strategy and luck play important roles, so you can’t just buy your way into having the best characters. It’s on both iOS and Android.

* READ: THE BANALITY OF REFUGEES
I will not dwell on politics here, but since you may be interested in my writing, I’ll share this one personal essay. It’s two stories: one personal, one biblical. My father was born a refugee; English was his sixth language. Having received his family’s case file from their resettlement agency, I share some of their story here.

@@@ IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A SHOE, IT’S ALLBIRDS @@@
I first read about Allbirds shoes in Business Insider. The first pair I bought hurt like hell; I didn’t know you should get a size up from your standard size (even 1.5 sizes up from a half-size). Once you find the right fit, they are so comfortable. I spent a week in Mexico City and only brought one pair of shoes, whether for climbing Aztec pyramids or enjoying fine dining. As a bonus, they’re light, soft, and can be worn with or without socks. Try them out.

UPCOMING EVENTS
-----------------------------------------------------

* SYSOMOS SUMMIT
February 27-March 1, Raleigh, NC
There are a lot of speakers I’m excited to catch: Served Fresh Media’s Charlie Oliver, Gen Z analyst Margaret Czeisler, and former colleagues Matt Rednor (now of Decoded Advertising) and Sebastian Saldarriaga (now of Huge). Come down to Raleigh and join us for some deep discussions and Southern hospitality.

* MARKETING WEEK UK
March 8-9 (I mean, 8-9 March), London
Will you be in London in early March? I will too, albeit WAY too briefly, as I have to go right from here to SXSW. I will get to participate in this annual British tent-pole event, speaking on this session toward the end of it: “A picture’s worth a thousand hashtags: How image recognition will power the future of analytics.”
http://mrktr.net/marketingweeklive

* SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST (SXSW)
I’ll be returning to South by Southwest for what I think is my ninth straight year. I will be speaking at W2O Group’s PreCommerce event – an annual invite-only affair (if you’re itching to go, let me know, and I’ll see if I can bring a +1 or +10). And then I’ll be out and about at the Interactive festival Friday through Monday.

???DID YOU KNOW ABOUT JUNO???
I was in an Uber in New York as the #DeleteUber movement was gaining steam, and I asked the driver what he thought about Uber versus Lyft
. “They’re the same company,” he said. The corporate management and payouts were so close that it didn't matter. He did recommend the new app Juno, now rolling out in NYC ahead of more ambitious plans, and their main differentiator is that they pay drivers a much higher share of each fare. I haven’t used them yet, but friends have recommended them. If it lines drivers’ pockets better, I’m all for it.
