Issue No. 14: Learn. Try. Share. (Your invite to Serial Marketers)
From Serial Marketer: "The Cutting Edge of Marketing” serialmarketer.net
-----------------------------------------------------
As Serially Sporadic gets rolling again this summer, I'm kicking off a long-overdue project: starting a community for fellow serial marketers.
When I rebranded my previous site, MarketersStudio.com, to Serial Marketer in 2016, starting a community was part of the idea. It didn't happen then, as I got distracted with some projects, and I also wasn't sure what the right medium was.
Now, I know, and it's Slack.
Slack has made it easy to create communities within communities. Are you just looking to stay apprised of events? Stick to that channel. Seeking jobs? Great. Want to have sidebar 1:1 or small-group conversions with various members? Go for it. Care to try a Slack-based book club? Keep that channel prominent. Want to switch among multiple Slack communities that you belong to? The mobile app is alright for that, and the desktop app is excellent (once I figured that trick out, my Slack usage skyrocketed). It also won't clutter your inbox, and it is easy to find great links and documents later.
If you want to be a pilot member, please sign up here; there's also a splash page at serialmarketers.net. I wrote a couple of teaser posts on LinkedIn and Facebook, and it will launch with more than 250 members from incredible backgrounds. I will be sending invites shortly.
As for me, I'm continuing to consult with Storyhunter while making plans for what's next, given Storyhunter is shifting its focus to its San Francisco office and winding down operations in NY. I remain bullish on their value proposition and will gladly connect you with their team anytime.
I'll share more news on what's ahead in time, and I welcome chatting sometime soon if there's an opportunity to collaborate. Also, let me know how I can be a resource for you. The jobs board is back in this newsletter edition, as I've come across a lot of exciting roles lately. If you want personal intros to any hiring managers below, let me know, and there are other things popping up that I can't always publicize.
That's what I'm making of myself these days. What are you making of yourself?
David

THE TALENT THAT BUILT VOICES.COM
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Voices.com CEO David Ciccarelli, and as we enjoyed lunch at Pies & Thighs in Brooklyn, I thought it'd be fun to interview him for my blog. Check out this feature on how he grew his marketplace to more than 200,000 members. http://mrktr.net/voices
LINKEDCHATS: THE NEW TWEETCHATS
Justin Kirby, the foremost author on branded content, is running a series of LinkedIn conversations with people who were quoted in his forthcoming book or who relate to the material. I had the good fortune to be his guinea pig. He then kicked off new conversations, including my friend Faris Yakob who is always full of brilliant ideas. See his recent edition which includes links to the others. http://mrktr.net/kirbylinkedin
THE ANA TAKES ON CHATBOTS
Chatbots have high awareness among marketers but relatively low adoption, according to this report from the Association of National Advertisers (ANA). Marketers are most interested in using them to save money, but what about using them to drive revenue? This is one of the better reports on the subject I've come across; you can download it for free. mrktr.net/anachatbots
GOT AN X? SCAN YOUR FACE IN 3D
Bellus3D was one of the more buzzed-about companies at this year's Consumer Electronics Show with its 3D face-scanning demo. They just brought it to the iPhone (X users only) so you can try it yourself. It's always fascinating to see how tech that was so futuristic and expensive a few years ago can run on your phone now. mrktr.net/bellus3d
IDENTIFY YOUR BLOCKY SELF
I don't even know what the deal is with this blockchain identification platform, but if you're like me and enjoy kicking the tires, then what the heck, let's connect. I'm not yet sure how Springrole differs from Dock.io or other similar projects that have come up. But, blockchain. And identity. And it makes me crave Chinese food. (Update: after writing this, I caught the founder's video where he describes this as a blockchain-verified resume. I still want Chinese food.) mrktr.net/springrole
BUILD YOUR SITE ON A HOUSE OF CARRDS
As I was considering building a splash page for Serial Marketers, I came across Carrd on Product Hunt, one of the top-rated listings there of all time. Carrd is a simple, free one-page site builder, and for $19, I linked it to the custom domain and accessed some other features. It comes with a number of templates that are easy to customize. It has a couple quirks; I prefer the look of my site on mobile that doesn't have the animation covering up the bottom half of the image, and there wasn't an easy way around that. I also couldn't seem to separately edit the mobile view of the site to get the call-to-action on the first screen. But for a half-hour's work, maybe an hour with getting the domain setup right, the result did the trick. mrktr.net/carrd
TALK ABOUT BANG(BEND) FOR YOUR BUCK
By far the most impressive freelancer I've dealt with on Fiverr or Upwork is Bend, an Indonesian designer. On Fiverr last week, I requested bids for the Serial Marketers seal (or "sigil," as my nephew Ari informed me). In the brief, I showed an ugly sketch I crafted, pointed to Cornell's sigil as inspiration, and then requested bids for who could make a professional version. I accepted a few bids, spending all of about $25 in total. Bend then posted a $5 quote and said he'd send me a draft for free; if I liked it, I could then pay. I had nothing to lose, and he seemed earnest, so I accepted it. His first version was outstanding, and he added other versions akin to what you see at serialmarketers.net. I'm only his second reviewer, but I think I'm his biggest fan, so reach out to him directly if you have a quick project you think he could take on. And feel free to tell him I sent you. http://mrktr.net/bangbend http://mrktr.net/tryfiverr (for new Fiverr customers, here's a referral link)
I've been working with Brand Innovators on securing speakers for some of their upcoming events, and I plan to attend their local slate in NYC this July. If you're on the brand side and interested in speaking there, let me know (and they love sponsors too). They are also programming for their Advertising Week events this fall.
BRAND INNOVATORS
I'll be attending these in NYC:
- July 11: Content Marketing (at AmEx)
- July 24: Mobile & Millennials (at Buzzfeed)
- July 25: Marketing Innovators (at LG)
- July 26: Future of Luxury Marketing (at Cadillac House)
And check out these others for July:

PLUGGEDIN: BLOCKCHAIN ADVERTISING ROUNDTABLE
July 17
New York, NY
How is blockchain disrupting the advertising world? I don't know, so I will moderate this discussion. Whenever I go to these, I take a lot of notes, as PluggedIn attracts some of the best experts in any field it covers. mrktr.net/blockchainjuly2018
AI DISRUPT
September 20
New York, NY
A friend recently connected me with the folks at Jetson who are running this conference on the latest applications of artificial intelligence. I'm working on a session on how it's used in marketing (a topic I spoke a lot about last year while at Sysomos, and I was involved with a great research project about it). If you're doing something I should know about in the space, please reach out. Want to attend? Use the code "jetson2018" to save 25%. mrktr.net/aidisrupt
----------------------------------------------------- JOBS
-----------------------------------------------------
FRAME.IO
Various roles
New York, NY
Frame.io, which has been called the "Slack of video" is a great firm that I explored partnering with while at Storyhunter. Their top hiring priorities are: Product Marketing Manager, Sr. Product Designer, Brand Designer, and Enterprise Account Executive. See the full slate of openings. mrktr.net/frameiojobs
INTEL
Director of Social Media Marketing
San Francisco or Santa Clara, CA; Portland, OR
Intel is one of the most continually impressive marketers, so this is an opportunity to work with the best in the business. The recruiter noted, "Intel titles low, as in most cases this role translates to an SVP on the agency side and a VP on the client side." mrktr.net/inteldirsocial
QUADPAY
VP of Marketing
New York, NY
I got introduced to this startup and was impressed. They allow brands and retailers to allow their customers to split purchases into four interest-free installments. They need a head of marketing who is more consumer-focused, as they're already doing a stellar job signing up merchants. See more below, but also check out "all jobs" if you like what they're doing, as they are growing fast. mrktr.net/quadpaymarketing
MAKERBOT
Director of Demand Gen
New York, NY
One of my favorite pioneering companies, Makerbot, is looking to ramp up interest in their wares. Performance marketers, if you can rapidly prototype their next slew of customers, please apply (or please have me connect you with the in-house recruiter). mrktr.net/makerbotdemandgen
