SERIAL MARKETER WEEKLY
Issue 24: Want 100+ Tech Recommendations?
From Serial Marketer: "The Cutting Edge of Marketing”
serialmarketer.net
--------------------------------------------------

Are you pro-list?

I like lists - reading them, writing them, rearranging them. My oldest brother had The Book of LIsts from 1977, and I was hooked when I discovered it several years later. Frequent readers of my columns know I love breaking topics down into bulleted or numbered lists, as I enjoy consuming information that way too.

Now, I have a new list, and it was born out of the need to solve a problem. I was on Fiverr working with someone to update my website, and I couldn't remember the name of my WordPress hosting company. So, I wrote it down in a Google Sheet, categorized it, and then started to write down a few other tools. Then I wrote down some alternates - mostly things I used, but some I heard good things about. And then I shared it on Slack and LinkedIn, and some other people recommended a few, and I thought of a few more, and now it's north of 100 recommendations - all categorized, and scannable, with commentary on why some are listed.

It's skewed toward tools for marketers, but hardly exclusively. It has productivity tools - such as scheduling apps, and a site that makes it easy to compare international time zones. It has research tools. It has some job-seeking sites. It has my favorite password manager, which is the kind of thing every single internet user should use.

I'm most interested in what's missing. What categories are missing? What are your favorite tools? I added an extra column for a third alternate because some of the recommendations friends shared were too good. Let me know; I'm always looking to learn. And please share the list with others if you know someone who might like it; as more people view it and send feedback, the quality gets better for everyone.

This list is one of the latest things I've made. What are you making of yourself?

FUTURE TECH FOR BRANDS
This article is a great, provocative read from the Betaworks crew. I can't say I'm sold that Venmo is the next hot branded social network, but there are some not-Badoo ideas in this event recap.

OPEN WIDE: A LOOK INTO CHUCHU TV & KIDS' OBSESSION WITH YOUTUBE
My nephew and 360i rising star Ari Berkowitz sent this link to me, as I banned his cousin from watching YouTube. I loved the story about ChuChu TV, which I've seen way too much of. There's a utopian purity here that veers into a sweet but slightly scary dystopia when you see how they're sanitizing classic nursery rhymes. The one area where I \disagree is the recommendation of YouTube Kids as a safe place for tots. Some of it's still not filtered (when I saw one of Spider-Man defecating, that's when the ban started), and a lot of it is just terrible, mind-numbing, vapid, commercial blather (e.g., all the toy reviews and unboxing videos).

TECH FOR GOOD: CLEANER AIRPORT BATHROOMS
With all the disheartening news about technology platforms being used to sway elections, compromise identities, and spy on people, here's some uplifting news: sensors and real-time feedback are helping airport custodial staff keep bathrooms cleaner. For frequent travelers, this is some of the best news of the year.

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK ON DAY 1 OF A NEW JOB
Often, these lists are hokey, but this is a very smart post, with the rationale provided for who to ask each question to. Even experienced professionals might neglect a few of these, and younger folks can learn a lot from this one. Granted, a number of these should be asked in the first interview, not on the first day.

INSERT GOOGLE SUBTRACTION PUN HERE
Please, if you happen to be using Google+ for more than what Google said is the typical 5-seconds per session, I'd love to hear about it. Google is shutting down the service within the next 10 months due to security concerns and low usage. Yet Google's share of digital content consumption is growing, showing that the socail strategy may be working while this one tactic failed.

FACEBOOK PORTAL: NO, OR HELL NO?
Facebook is launching its first hardware device, a video chat hub which is far more impressive than the Echo Show that I returned within days, but it does the same thing - just better. The media response has been scathing. I get the lack of trust in Facebook, and how Facebook seems to be constantly preaching peace, love, and understanding while on the defensive from one privacy scandal to the next. Yet are Google, Amazon, or Apple really that much better? Is Samsung? I gather Americans wouldn't then be so comfortable with a Chinese manufacturer (the Chinese would also fear Americans spying on them). Given what we already share with our phones, which all have voice-activation features that could presumably eavesdrop on us, is Portal really so different?

HOW CONNECTED IS YOUR COMMUNITY?
Somehow, I missed this interactive map in the Times a few weeks ago. Check the map, and then see how the 50 states would look if they were redrawn based on how we're connected with each other on Facebook.

EVENTS

Want to include your event below? Just reply with the details.

AN EVENING WITH AD HERETICS
October 10
New York, NY
This $10 event is worth at least $11.50. I found out about it through Bob Hoffman's newsletter and look forward to hearing what he, Doc Searls, and others have to say. If you're going, maybe we can sneak in flasks and do shots every time someone says something that makes us question everything we've done in our careers.

YUM'S THE WORD: STORIES OF BADASS WOMEN
October 11
New York, NY
Come join the only storytelling show that features homemade ice cream cakes, Mad Libs, and more (they even have a supply of Lactaid handy). This month's edition features Kambri Crews, Alison Leiby, Jiji Lee, and host Robin Gelfenbien. Robin does these regularly, so check the clips of presenters like Jason Biggs and Tim Gunn on her site for a taste of what she does.

COMMUNICATIONS WEEK
October 15-19
New York, NY
Kite Hill PR is back with another round of their annual Communications Week. This year's theme is The Workforce of the Future. As always, they have a mix of paid and free events, including the PRSA Tri-State conference, plus some shorter events open to all.

DIGITAL CROSSROADS 2018
October 26
Louisville, KY
Want to check out the best digital event in Kentucky? Me too. That's why I'm joining my colleague Leo Morejon to visit the Bluegrass State and take in the bourbon, baseball bats, and horse races while also meeting some of the nation's finest marketing minds. I was pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorite industry friends are based out there, and many more will be coming from all over the broader region (as I'm in the NYC bubble though, don't even ask me what the heck this region is; only thanks to Google did I learn that Louisville is too far west in Kentucky to be part of Appalachia).

THE PERFECT BRAND WORKSHOP
October 29-30

My friends Clay Hebert and Weston Woodward are hosting this workshop about telling your best story to the perfect people. They're fantastic, and with this exclusive link, they're offering you 10% off just because you're so swell for reading this. Say hi to them for me if you go. Austin is lovely this time of year.

DPAA VIDEO EVERYWHERE SUMMIT
October 30
New York, NY
Hailed as "the largest one-day media event of the year," hot topics include multi-screen marketing, location data, and new media models. Brands and agencies can attend for as little as $150, and I'm looking forward to attending. I'm doing a bit of work with them as well, so if you have an audience (even a newsletter, blog, Slack group, podcast etc) and are interested in spreading the word, let me know; I may be able to help snag a press pass.

TECHONOMY 2018
November 11-13
Half Moon Bay, CA
This is an excellent event series; I went last year, and their lineup is full of memorable speakers. Everyone in the room has some impressive background and story. Request an invite via the link. "This November please join us for a probing, wide-ranging conversation about the tech-inflected issues that affect business and our world. Techonomy’s breadth is unlike other “tech” conferences. This year’s theme is Harnessing Tech for Responsible Growth, and as always we will address many of the issues facing leaders today."

CES 2019
January 8-11
I'll probably return for my 13th straight year. Registration is now open. Are you going? I'm already making plans with 4C's Aaron Goldman to eat Cinnabon in the Vegas airport again - but none of those mini-bons. Full-size 'bons are for closers!

LUMINDX
Part-Time Marketer
Boston, MA (could be remote for an excellent communicator and practitioner)
I met the founder at an event recently. Here's what she needs: "We're looking for a part-time person who is well acquainted with digital search marketing, including Google Ads. We'd love someone with at least 3 years of experience. We help people identify which skin diseases they may have using artificial intelligence, and connect with relevant doctors."
Reach out to me and I can connect you with the founder

UNSUPERVISED
Head of Product Marketing
Boulder, CO
Via the community: Unsupervised (Unsupervised.com) is hiring a full-time Head of Product Marketing role in Boulder, CO. The President is a close friend. They've raised $3.5M and the two founders previously sold a company to Oracle and are looking for another big exit. They're looking for someone who has worked in Product Marketing for a B2B big data, BI, or Analytics enterprise solution that has been targeted to Marketers or Analytics professionals as customers. People coming out of companies like Domo, Tableau, Looker, etc. would be amazing. This person would get to build out the full Product Marketing function for the company and build out their own team. This is a full-time role in Boulder, CO - no remote or consultants.

SPACE ODDITY
Various roles
Los Angeles, CA

I can also connect you with the hiring lead.

NOTEWORTH
Head of Product Marketing
New York, NY
Noteworth, a healthcare-related startup, is looking for a product marketer, one who has experience launching a product and can build and lead a team. They're gearing up for a pretty big launch in January and need the right marketer. The company has impressive credentials. The target is to market to execs at hospitals, but you don't need healthcare expertise. The biggest trick for them is they need both the doer and the manager, so it could be an execution-oriented person ready to step up and manage/lead, or more of a manager who wants to go back to rolling up sleeves.
I can connect you with the hiring lead.

MIGHTYHIVE
Lots of roles
New York, San Francisco, many other global cities
As Lizzie in Serial Marketers noted, "MightyHive is growing like CRAZY -- we have a ton of openings globally." From their site: "MightyHive is a Programmatic Solutions Partner for forward-thinking marketers and agencies. As one of the largest and fastest-growing programmatic buyers in the world, we know how to navigate the system for top brands and agencies. "

WISTIA
VP Marketing
Cambridge, MA
This is a tremendous role for the right person, whether based near Cambridge or willing to relocate: "The Vice President of Marketing will lead and deliver break-through marketing strategies to propel the company to a new level of brand awareness, perception, and market penetration. He/she must be a collaborative team player who can help build upon the value of the existing reputation of Wistia and have a passion and appreciation for video. He/she must be creative, dynamic, engaging, curious, thoughtful, team player."
