* EVENT SEASON WRAPS; LET’S ROLL UP OUR SLEEVES

As April approaches, CES and SXSW are behind us, as well as mainstays like Social Media Week. My company had its own summit; you'll find a link to keynote videos below. April’s always a fun month. There are fewer of those major distractions and more opportunities to follow through.

I'm enjoying reconnecting with old friends from my relatively new perch and exploring new ways of collaborating. Beyond official events, I’ll include my travel schedule below – at least, as I know it. In Q2, I have plans to be in LA (for the 4As), San Francisco, Vegas, Atlanta, and London, so check the dates and let me know if your timing in any of those cities overlaps. Meetings in NYC are always easy too, as
are calls. I mean it when I say we should keep in touch, or reach out if we haven’t met.

* DOWNLOAD: SLIDESHARE ON VISUAL SEARCH
 I’ve been giving a few talks lately about visual search and image recognition. The SlideShare here includes a brief history of the subject, a framework for the kinds of intelligence marketers should expect, and how leaders and innovators are furthering the field. You can download the master version from SlideShare, one that I presented in the UK but have since adapted
for other regions. Also, note that the link to W2O takes you to their CommonSense blog with volumes of coverage of their events.

* READ: IT’S ALL TOPO CHICO AT SXSW
I’m clearly getting too old for South by Southwest if the most prominent brand for me this year was a type of Mexican sparkling water. For a taste of this year’s SXSW experience, here’s my annual recap in Ad Age.

* READ: NATURAL BORN HEROES (YOU CAN WIN A COPY)
One of the best books I’ve read lately, Natural Born Heroes is essentially two books interwoven into one. First, there’s the history of heroism in Crete, and how it inspired resistance fighters to kidnap a German general during WWII. Then there’s the story about fitness and nutrition. I’m already trying some of the advice here, though it may be awhile before I take up parkour. As a bonus to you, the link doesn’t go right to the book, but to the first-ever Serially Sporadic sweepstakes to win one of three Kindle editions. The barrier to entry is intentionally low: follow me on Twitter. The odds of winning are better
than a typical sweepstakes, so give it a shot.

* READ: HOW A WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT USES TECH TO TRACK TRUMP
The New York Times profiled one of their White House correspondents, and I love the approach. Instead of a pundit, here’s someone who relies on secure communication channels and access to various forms of media to do his job. He also talks about how his 14-year-old pranks her parents with weird shopping list additions via their Google Home – something my 3-year-old is already doing with Alexa. Kids today…

* WATCH: SYSOMOS SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTS
Many of my favorite events are produced by agencies and tech companies. 360i’s are some of the
best produced conferences, and I’ve attended great ones from Chute, OneSpot, and others. At Sysomos, we put on our client summit in Raleigh a few weeks ago, and the marketing team and others did a tremendous job. You can watch the keynotes from speakers such as Forrester’s Melissa Parrish, AwesomenessTV alum Margaret Czeisler, Coca-Cola’s Simon Cowart, Facebook’s Kunal Merchant, CRI’s Jason Falls, and W2O’s Bob Pearson. Really – no BS – all are excellent, and I wouldn’t know where to begin if I had to tell you to pick just one, so give any of them a shot.

* READ: WHY I DON'T RESPOND TO RANDOM LINKEDIN REQUESTS
Ever have an idea that you plan on writing about for years but never do? This is one of those evergreen pieces. There's already an interesting discussion in the comments, so join in. Author Tim Sanders, one of my favorite writers, had a completely opposite point of
view and made the best case I've seen for accepting random requests (even if I disagree based on how I use LinkedIn).

(((THIS COLLAR’S NO DOG)))
I was considering getting AirPods but had reservations about the price, battery life, and wait list. Looking around, and after reading some coverage from David Pogue, I settled on the LG collar-style earbuds from LG. The Tone Active+ has an added bonus of including a speaker so that you can ditch the earbuds when in a private setting. I now take the Active+ with me everywhere, and as long as I charge it every day or two, the battery lasts.

UPCOMING EVENTS
-----------------------------------------------------

Below are some events I’m involved with or cities I’ll be visiting this quarter. Let me know if we overlap in any of these places, and we can compare schedules.

* 4As TRANSFORMATION 2017
April 2-5, Los Angeles, CA
The
annual conference by the American Association of Advertising Agencies is back to tackle heavy hitting issues around transparency, hiring, AI, and more. I’ll be speaking Sunday afternoon and will be around for the rest.

* GROW.CO’S MAU
May 3-4, Las Vegas, NV

* ATLANTA VISIT
May 9-11
I’ll be in Atlanta and may be hosting a private gathering May 9; if you will be there then, please let me know so I can get you an invite. I am still finalizing plans, so more details will come soon.

* PROPELIFY
May 18, Hoboken, NJ
I’m attending this one, after a good experience there last year at the Hoboken Waterfront. It’s a nominal cost and gets a good crowd attending. If you purchase right away, you can even get tickets for $7 via this link.

==A BACKPACK A SECRET AGENT WOULD LOVE==
I wasn’t in the market for a new bag, but I saw the Betabrand update about their Under-the-Jack-Pack 2, and I had to try it. With this streamlined backpack, I can throw in my laptop, charger, and a couple other accessories, and then slip the pack under my overcoat or even
sport jacket. As someone who is frequently mobile, this helps keep my hands free while minimizing weight. For mass transit commuters, it's so slim that you don’t need to take it off while standing on a train.
