My friend Jack Wedge , the talented young animator sent me the cutest bunny-cat dodging blue and GREEN raindrops - our April TammyTalk #5 header. The GIF sparked my brain about rain and exactly what it takes in our business to MAKE IT RAIN. In prior TammyTalks, (available for re-read on our website ) I wrote about performance assessment, setting goals for 2017, working on your social media platform and changing wishes to dreams. There is one word, and only one that will really describe what it takes to MAKE IT RAIN, the theme for April and TammyTalk #5. That word is EFFORT.
I believe that the best way to show EFFORT is with true stories from a few GREEN AGENCY clients. Following the story flash, the actor, in their own words, answered the question, “What makes you put forth the effort?”
Enjoy the read.
Lela Elam booked a co-star role on the TBS pilot WRECKED. Imagine our surprise when the picked-up show’s breakdown listed Lela’s character as available. We called Casting and we were assured that it was a formality and Lela had secured the role for the series. We were also told that Casting would be in Miami for a session. Lela insisted that we arrange a meeting so that she could be 100% sure of the commitment. Lela was humble, prepared, and perfect during her audition. Taking nothing for granted. 7 episodes followed for Lela as DIANE FROM TOLEDO!
“I cannot imagine my life doing anything else except what it is I do. I put in the effort because I still have breath in my body to do so. I will stop when I cease to exist.” - Lela Elam
Hero Hunter is five years old. We were asked by our awesome LA partner, The Green and Green Talent Group, to have a few kids self-tape for a pilot shooting in LA. 3 days before the self-tape was due, Hero’s Dad had a well-lit, clear sound, adorable performance tape with lots of dialogue ready to go. 2 days later, FOX Studios asked that Hero to be in LA for a Producer’s meeting – It was late Saturday. Sunday, Hero and his Dad were on a plane. All plans were rescheduled for Hero’s opportunity. Monday, Hero was one of three kids meeting with a team of FOX executives.
“What makes me put forth the effort is the possibility of giving my family a better life and showing my children that anything is possible if you're willing to put in the work.” – Emmett Hunter (Hero’s Dad)
Quinn Bozza started working with THE GREEN AGENCY in September 2014 – brand new to the industry. Quinn never said no – regardless of the crazy hours, unusual productions or occasional under quote pay scale. Every opportunity was a chance to learn and grow as an actor. 3 weeks ago, Quinn wrapped shooting his first STARRING role in a soon to be cult classic. (Can’t share the details but follow this future Oscar winner!)
“I went down paths to the right and paths to the left but always ended up wanting to do what I truly have a passion for which is to bring stories to life by performing on the screen and stage. Waking up every morning telling myself who I am and who I truly want to be in life forces me to put forth effort every day, otherwise I would be lying to myself.” - Quinn Bozza
I met Isis Massoud through a dear friend, actor and publicist Lon Haber. Lon said she was a power person. WOW! With a background in choreography and dance, Isis helms a fantastic music video experience but that’s not all. Isis is an actor, producer and director. She attends and participates in every available opportunity. To name a few from last month… the Filmgate Conference, the Borscht Festival, the MIFF and the Knight Foundation Grant session.
“I'd say two important things for me that I live by are ‘show up and follow up.’ Showing up to the event, meeting, audition, organically keeps you in the know and connects you with like minded creators. Following up keeps the conversations going and stimulates collaboration. All of it keeps you fresh in the minds of people who could provide you with opportunity.” - Isis Massoud
Edson Jean is a brilliant actor, writer and director. As for booking short and long format, he is 100%. He books every audition. With a wink, Edson says he’ll try his best and then performs completely off page. He was amazing in MOONLIGHT and utterly compelling when I saw him in the staged reading of Tarrel Alvin McCraney’s play ‘In the Red and Brown Water.’ He has two web series in production and HBO is closely following his trajectory.
“Knowing that I don't have to be JUST an actor, because as a writer, I take a hands on approach in positively impacting the opportunities provided to local talent. Why sit back and complain about the lack of significant roles for actors in Miami, when I can just write them?” – Edson Jean
There are so many more stories out there of success and EFFORT. It takes teamwork, a community, a cast and crew, a workshop, a school, a showcase, a network, a supportive family to get it done. And your team at THE GREEN AGENCY is fully behind you.
We’d love to hear your answer to the question “What makes you put forth the effort?” Post it on our FB page. Let’s keep that journey going on.
