Hello!

We've been quite productive over here at East Yard. So much so, that we were unable to put out our April newsletter earlier. So we've rolled April and May into one for this edition. Since our last update we've had the pleasure of playing host to three poetry events, an art exhibition and a classic film night. We've also wrapped up our work with Habitat for Humanity TT on their worthwhile initiative - SHElter - a land empowerment campaign for women.

We had another reason to celebrate as the work of three of our artists, namely, Darnell Mathias-Harewood, Jamie J. Philbert and Walda Waithe was selected and is currently on display at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage as part of their current "Celebrating the Black Experience" Art Exhibition.

Another of our family members, Angelica Alleyne is debuting CAPTIVE, her first solo art exhibition and we couldn't be prouder.

May is shaping up to be equally exciting as East Studio is once again booked for live events and exhibitions. We also want to congratulate our Creative Associate, Dominique Roy on the roll out of DTR Solutions, her creative solutions company. DTR Solutions has been partnering with creatives to host events at East Yard.

Toward the end of May our non-profit arm CFAFF/For Common Good's current cycle of its youth project which is funded by the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust I comes to a close. It culminates from June 3-4, 2022 with the For Common Good Arts for Social Change Festival to be held here at East Yard. In this edition we'll share a few highlights from the youth program.

Last month The Burg re-ignited its Classic Film Night series and hosted its first East Yard Edition. We're looking forward to part two in May.

Have a wonderful month!

CAPTIVE - A debut solo art exhibition by Angelica Alleyne

Angelica Alleyne or 'Angie' as we affectionately refer to her here at East Yard, has been a part of our family since 2018. Having come to us as a participant in For Common Good's Youth Arts Enrichment Program, Angie has gone on to complete her Certificate in Visual Arts at UWI and has been a facilitator for several of our youth and adult arts programmes.

A talented visual artist, fashion designer and make-up artist, Angie has exhibited at several group exhibitions here at East Yard and now presents her debut solo exhibition, CAPTIVE which opens at East Studio on May 20th, 2022.

Stay tuned to our social media channel for updates.

FOR COMMON GOOD Youth Arts Enrichment Program (YAEP)

With some sessions taking place right here at East Yard, the FOR COMMON GOOD Youth Arts Enrichment Program (YAEP) offers a precious opportunity for young people to develop their unique identities and build skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.

One of two lead programs of our non-profit arm, CFAFF/For Common Good, YAEP has arts education at its core. This community driven program not only builds the visual, performing and culinary arts skills of participants but also exposes them to the concepts of art for social change and cultural diplomacy.

Building on its previous youth arts programs, the current iteration allows Trinidad and Tobago based youth between the ages of 12-17 to learn a creative skill, apply it to a social change theme, chosen from the UN SDG's and the opportunity to participate in a virtual exchange with youth champions from around the globe.

Currently funded by the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust I, For Common Good has partnered with the following groups/organizations to implement the program:
  1. All Inclusive FCG - Utilizing the arts to engage and include young persons with special needs
  2. AUX - Using the arts of marketing and branding to empower youth community tourism ambassadors
  3. Mission Fyzo - Documenting oral history and culture
  4. NoFilter - A youth engagement project that uses photography to empower and acknowledge the voices of our young people
  5. Walnut Tree Farms - The Joining Table - Training young people about "slow food", professional catering and compassion

Poetry Poetry and more Poetry!

East Studio has been jumping with various poetry activities. In May, Bars" will be held on the 14th and 28th. Stay tuned to our socials for details.

Earlier in April, East Studio welcomed author and poet, Keeron Isaac for the in-person launch of his book Poet Tree which cascades the themes of family, love, growth, patriotism and reflections through nature.
