Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Welcome to almost fall! We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. Now that school is back in full swing, neighbors are reminded that students and buses are back on the roads, and safety is paramount for those driving during these busy times of day. Please be mindful of stop signs, crossing guards, unprotected crosswalks, pedestrians, bikes, and speed limits, particularly in school zones.
On that note, the City is undertaking a process to determine where speed cameras may be installed under Virginia’s new school zone laws. See more here:

Nominations for the 2022-2023 BSVCA:
It’s that time of year when we will be holding elections for the new board. Whether you have served before or not, you are welcome and invited to serve now! Please email bsvcainfo@gmail.com with your interest by the end of September or earlier, if possible. Members need to be in good standing, but do not worry if your membership has lapsed! You can renew at the link below. If you aren’t sure of your membership status or have any questions, please contact the BSVCA email. Elections will be held at our annual meeting.
Save the Date Annual Meeting:
Our annual meeting will be held October 29 (time TBD), where we will hear from Alexandria's Mayor Justin Wilson. We will again offer online questions as well as live Q&A. Elections will be first on the agenda. Zoom links will be shared in a later message. If you wish to vote, please be sure your membership is up to date.
Polk Ave Sidewalk Extension:
There is an update on the Polk Avenue Sidewalk Project. On July 25, the City’s Traffic & Parking Board voted to approve the removal of nine parking spaces to allow for the installation of a sidewalk on Polk Avenue. That decision has been appealed by way of petition, and the appeal will be heard at the September 17 City Council Public Hearing.
Residents may speak at the public hearing either in person or via Zoom. Should you wish to speak, please either:
More information about how to participate is available here. The City Council docket will be posted online prior to the meeting.
Duke Street in Motion:
This project is entering its second phase, which will involve conceptual designs for the Duke corridor. The focus of this project has been on improving access to non-private vehicles/buses/metro and less so on private vehicles. Results of the first phase and more details about the project can be found here:

Mile-Long Yard Sale:
At this time, the BSVCA board has decided not to host the MLYS in the Fall of 2022. Circumstances both in our control and out of our control have made this event a challenge to host this year. Thank you to Sean Casey for his background work on this project and to those who responded with interest or details about prior sales.
