KnitHacker Newsletter - August 25th, 2019

Hi Margaret,

This week I gently confronted a person who didn't want to pay a designer for a one-of-a-kind pattern and decided instead to find it for free. I asked them to consider how hard the designer had worked on the pattern and how their small craft business supports a family. Unfortunately my powers of persuasion were not strong that day; I stopped engaging with the free pattern seeker.

Although this exhausting exchange frustrated me, it also made me reflect on what's driving this attitude. In my point of view, it's two things - 1) creative work is woefully undervalued (and I hate to say it, but we often undervalue ourselves by charging far too little for handmade items); and 2) pattern design is seen as a hobby, which is connected to outmoded views on work traditionally viewed as feminine.

By paying for a pattern, you are saying, "I respect what you do and I support you." Your seemingly small gesture is in fact a powerful act with the potential to alter attitudes, uplift artists, and support families nationwide ... and that's no small thing at all! Please support designers.

If you're a designer and you'd like to have your patterns featured, email me at danielle@knithacker.com for details and let's change hearts and minds together.

Danielle
