Community Music School of Santa Cruz
Spring Session

Community Music School of Santa Cruz presents their third online Redwood Music Camp this weekend, on April 24th and 25th. 'Spring Session' is a series of eleven instrument-specific Celtic music workshops conducted over Zoom. Faculty include Jesse Autumn (harp), David Brewer (whistle, bodhran), Adam Hendey (guitar), Janet Herman (Irish tenor banjo, mandolin), Éilís Kennedy (voice), Rebecca Lomnicky (Scottish fiddle), and John Weed (Irish fiddle).

Workshops are $10 each, or you can buy an all-weekend pass for $75.

Both the Happy Hour and Pub Quiz (Saturday afternoon) and the Group Jam Session (Sunday afternoon) are included with the price of any registration.

Whelan Master Session #23:
with Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan

Since March 2020, John has stepped up his online activities, and his latest project is Master Sessions with John Whelan. This edition of Whelan Master Sessions features Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan.

Siobhan Peoples's musical history is a combination of Donegal through her father, Tommy, and Clare through her grandmother, Kitty Linnane, who was the pianist with the original Kilfenora Ceili Band. Raised in Clare, she has been involved in music in the community from the age of 11. Discovering the expansive fiddle music of Donegal in her mid teens led Siobhan to take a different approach to the fiddle, becoming immersed in the vastly different style and repertoire of the county. She has been a tutor in the University of Limerick for the past 18 years and enjoys teaching all over Ireland and Europe.

Murty Ryan is a button accordion player from a small, north-Tipperary village called Toor; he now resides in Ennis, Co. Clare. He comes from a musical family and his brother Noel was a one-time member of the renowned group Danu. In 2002, Murty released a CD with Clare fiddle player Siobhan Peoples, and their musical partnership which has taken them to many festivals both here and abroad. He is part of the vibrant music scene that exists in the town of Ennis and more recently has become one of the organisers of the Ennis Trad Festival.

I'm very excited to be hosting Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan - two incredible musicians that should not be missed. I know the weather is getting better in a lot of places and there are many many virtual and live things happening but things are not what they should be in Ireland and that is why I continue to do this to help support these musicians that have lost so much. Seven-time All-Ireland Button Accordion Champion John Whelan is one of the world's best living Irish button accordion players. Along with his All-Ireland Championships, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. John's music has been featured on such TV shows as 'Sex in the City,' 'History's Mysteries' and 'History Detective.' John performs with the John Whelan Band and has also teamed up with his old pal Brian Conway forming the group Gailfean, which also features Máirtin De Cógáin and Don Penzien have released their first new CD. Before we cast old words aside, let us consider the sublime beauty and profound oddness of the ancient tongue that has been spoken on this island for almost 3,000 years.

In Thirty-Two Words for Field, Manchan Magan meditates on these words - and the nuances of a way of life that is disappearing with them.

Sea Tamagotchi: Manchán Magan embarked upon a journey along the coast roads of Mayo, Donegal, Sligo and Galway, seeking out forgotten sea words, maritime terms and coastal customs. This book contains 38 sea words in Irish he selected and drawings, collages and photographs by Antic-Ham.

In February 2020 Manchán set out along the coast roads of Mayo and Donegal seeking out sea words, maritime terms & coastal customs.In autumn 2020 he continued his search in Connemara and Inishmore.

April Verch
Fiddle Workshop

There are many regional styles of fiddling in Canada including Ottawa Valley, Western Canadian, Métis, Maritime, Cape Breton and French Canadian. April Verch will be choosing 2 tunes to teach, that represent 2 of these regions. Instruction will be 'by ear' where April will break the tunes down slowly into small, repeatable sections.

April will show how to take the tunes and build them from the basic melody into your own version of the tunes by implementing left hand ornamentation and bowing techniques. These “tools” will be useful for you to apply to other tunes you play as well. She is mindful of keeping with the roots of this tradition – getting together to make music and have a great time in a relaxed, social environment!

For over two decades, fiddler, singer, songwriter and step dancer April Verch has been recording and captivating listeners worldwide. The Ottawa Valley native has garnered praise from music's heavy hitters including NPR, Rolling Stone, No Depression and more, for her fresh and feisty approach to deep North Americana. Verch's signature sound blends together regional Canadian, American old-time, classic country and more, resulting in a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds.

On stage is where her diverse repertoire comes to life, with a presence that is versatile, robust, and masterfully executed. Her delicate voice, energetic footwork and stunning playing have brought her to stages across the globe, wowing audiences with her jaw-dropping performance. With 13 albums and over two decades of touring under her belt, she is a seasoned veteran.

Verch won't be the one to tell you about her championship titles, nominations, and awards, or the fact that she was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, as part of a segment called 'Fiddle Nation'. Instead, in speaking with her, you'll hear about how passionate she is about sharing her music; in small gatherings in remote communities in Iqaluit, to large prestigious concert halls like Mozartsal in Vienna.

Verch's ability to preserve the authentic folk traditions of the past and reintroduce them into the musical landscape of the present is a testament to her masterful musicianship and widespread appeal.

Lark Camp Cabaret Episode 5

Our next Virtual Cabaret will be Friday, April 30 (not the 23rd as previously reported). It will run about an hour and feature such luminaries as Jason Adajian, Ashley Lounsbury, Alex Bernstein, Kevin Hughes, Scott Gifford, Jenette Sellin, Greg Jenkins, Mark Sellin, and Evan Sellin. As you know, there will be no in-person Lark Camp until 2022, but the Lark Camp team is working on plans for Lark Camp Online. Via Zoom, we'll offer a full five days of workshops, happy hours, a swap meet, and breakout rooms for sessions. Be sure to save August 4 - 8 (Wednesday through Sunday).

Brian Walker
Jamming Over the Internet

This class is lead by Brian Walker, the main sound engineer at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Brian's class consists of six weekly 75-minute sessions held online via Zoom.

Brian says,
Like a lot of people, I've been frustrated by my inability to play music with others in-person and joining a zoom session where only one person at a time can be heard just didn't feel like playing together. So last year I started researching ways to actually play with other people in real-time over the internet and it's been a great experience - I now have weekly rehearsals with two groups, and it's fantastic.

Now that I've done the research, I thought it might be helpful to teach a class on the subject. It starts on May 2nd.

Building on the recent popular class taught at Redwood Music Camp Online, David Brewer is offering a three part master class over Zoom for people interested in developing their knowledge and craft of Celtic-style melody composition.

During these upbeat sessions, David will guide you through every form of Celtic melody, from jigs and reels to hornpipes and pipe marches, dissecting traditional tunes to highlight what makes them tick. With over two decades of experience and hundreds of original tunes to his name, David offers a deep dive into his compositional thought process, as well as tips and tricks for crafting your own melodies.  

Open to musicians and non-musicians of all levels.
