Accordion Fridays live concert series is back featuring: Renée de la Prade from Hamburg, Germany, Will Allen from Kent, UK, STAGG from London, UK via Scotland, Calvaleigh Rasmussen from Berkeley, CA, and Salane from Oakland, CA.. The hidden thread here is Celtic Music!

Renée de la Prade, brings a set of stomp-and-holler tunes with her button accordion, voice, and her boots, mixing Cajun, blues, reggae, Irish, French, punk, and other flavors that taste good together for a rocking show.

Will Allen plays English, Scottish and Irish dance tunes on melodeon. (Though he swears he's playing all English tunes for St. George's Day). Will's playing is very rhythmic, hypnotic and soulful. He's a member of the Ship Band; the U.K.'s Premier Ceilidh band.

Calvaleigh Rasmussen plays dance music from across the centuries, weaving medieval songs with strands of 20th century folk music into big cozy sound tapestries. You'll hear lots of European and American folk music, lots of great rhythm and a bit of singing.

Salane's 'The Dark Family Hour': dark mysterious music, polkas and waltzes, psychedelia, comedy and Tom Waits covers. Salane is an unforgettable performer who brings us to other worlds.

All shows are LIVE, FREE, and HAVE ACCORDIONS. You know you want - some bellows-shaking cheer!

Whelan Master Session #23:
with Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan

Saturday, April 24th, 2:00 PM

Online via Zoom

Since March 2020, John has stepped up his online activities, and his latest project is Master Sessions with John Whelan. This edition of Whelan Master Sessions features Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan.

Siobhan Peoples's musical history is a combination of Donegal through her father, Tommy, and Clare through her grandmother, Kitty Linnane, who was the pianist with the original Kilfenora Ceili Band. Raised in Clare, she has been involved in music in the community from the age of 11. Discovering the expansive fiddle music of Donegal in her mid teens led Siobhan to take a different approach to the fiddle, becoming immersed in the vastly different style and repertoire of the county. She has been a tutor in the University of Limerick for the past 18 years and enjoys teaching all over Ireland and Europe.

Murty Ryan is a button accordion player from a small, north-Tipperary village called Toor; he now resides in Ennis, Co. Clare. He comes from a musical family and his brother Noel was a one-time member of the renowned group Danu. In 2002, Murty released a CD with Clare fiddle player Siobhan Peoples, and their musical partnership which has taken them to many festivals both here and abroad. He is part of the vibrant music scene that exists in the town of Ennis and more recently has become one of the organisers of the Ennis Trad Festival.

John says:
I'm very excited to be hosting Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan - two incredible musicians that should not be missed. I know the weather is getting better in a lot of places and there are many many virtual and live things happening but things are not what they should be in Ireland and that is why I continue to do this to help support these musicians that have lost so much. Lets take the time to support these artists and help make up some of their losses but more important be a part of something special.

Go to for details on how to get your zoom link.

On Wednesdays, John also offers a free one-hour tune teach from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM followed by John's 'Taking Time' slow session at 4:00 PM Pacific - Check them out here: John sends out a tune list and Zoom link for them on Wednesday mornings. Email John at to get on the list or for more details.

Seven-time All-Ireland Button Accordion Champion John Whelan is one of the world's best living Irish button accordion players. John was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s, and learned his craft from such legends as Lucy Farr, Roger Sherlock, Paddy Taylor, Mick O Connor and his teacher Brendan Mulkaire. Along with his All-Ireland Championships, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. John's music has been featured on such TV shows as 'Sex in the City,' 'History's Mysteries' and 'History Detective.' John performs with the John Whelan Band and has also teamed up with his old pal Brian Conway forming the group Gailfean, which also features Máirtin De Cógáin and Don Penzien have released their first new CD. For over a decade, John has performed 'Monday's with John' every Monday evening on his Facebook Profile.

Caoimhe says:
As the Youth Officer of the Cooley-Keegan branch of San Francisco, I wanted to engage with other youth who are equally as passionate about Irish culture. While virtually connecting with others does not compare to playing a tune alongside others or dancing at a céilí, it has allowed us to create international relationships.

In order to bring together children from around the globe and to celebrate the many talents found within Comhaltas, we decided to create an all youth concert. We are very excited to present an international selection of musicians, singers, and dancers who will share their amazing gifts. This free event will occur on April 24th at 6 PM PDT over Zoom. For more information and to receive the link for the event, please reach out to We can't wait to see you on the 24th and for you to participate in the many connections we are building right now! Go raibh maith agaibh!

Many thanks

Manchan Magan Interview
with Anne Carew

Sunday April 25th, 1:00 PM

Online via Zoom

Join Anne Cassidy Carew, Cultural Director of the UICC in a live Zoom chat with Manchán Magan, author of 32 Words for Field and Sea Tamagotchi.

32 Words for Field: The richness of a language closely tied to the natural landscape offered our ancestors a more magical way of seeing the world. Before we cast old words aside, let us consider the sublime beauty and profound oddness of the ancient tongue that has been spoken on this island for almost 3,000 years.

In Thirty-Two Words for Field, Manchan Magan meditates on these words - and the nuances of a way of life that is disappearing with them.

Sea Tamagotchi: Manchán Magan embarked upon a journey along the coast roads of Mayo, Donegal, Sligo and Galway, seeking out forgotten sea words, maritime terms and coastal customs. This book contains 38 sea words in Irish he selected and drawings, collages and photographs by Antic-Ham.

In February 2020 Manchán set out along the coast roads of Mayo and Donegal seeking out sea words, maritime terms & coastal customs. In autumn 2020 he continued his search in Connemara and Inishmore.

A selection of the words he encountered are gathered on these pages.

Sea Tamagotchi: (Foclóir Farraige) was been made possible by Galway2020 and the fishermen and folklorists who generously shared their wisdom. The following pages have recordings of over 200 words. Short films have been made of some, and a little book too.

Fiddle Workshop

Sunday, April 25th, 3:00 PM PDT

Online via Zoom

Sign Up via Eventbrite

There are many regional styles of fiddling in Canada including Ottawa Valley, Western Canadian, Métis, Maritime, Cape Breton and French Canadian. April Verch will be choosing 2 tunes to teach, that represent 2 of these regions. Instruction will be 'by ear' where April will break the tunes down slowly into small, repeatable sections.

April will show how to take the tunes and build them from the basic melody into your own version of the tunes by implementing left hand ornamentation and bowing techniques. These “tools” will be useful for you to apply to other tunes you play as well. She is mindful of keeping with the roots of this tradition – getting together to make music and have a great time in a relaxed, social environment!

For over two decades, fiddler, singer, songwriter and step dancer April Verch has been recording and captivating listeners worldwide. The Ottawa Valley native has garnered praise from music's heavy hitters including NPR, Rolling Stone, No Depression and more, for her fresh and feisty approach to deep North Americana. Verch's signature sound blends together regional Canadian, American old-time, classic country and more, resulting in a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds.

On stage is where her diverse repertoire comes to life, with a presence that is versatile, robust, and masterfully executed. Her delicate voice, energetic footwork and stunning playing have brought her to stages across the globe, wowing audiences with her jaw-dropping performance. With 13 albums and over two decades of touring under her belt, she is a seasoned veteran.

Verch won't be the one to tell you about her championship titles, nominations, and awards, or the fact that she was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, as part of a segment called 'Fiddle Nation'. Instead, in speaking with her, you'll hear about how passionate she is about sharing her music; in small gatherings in remote communities in Iqaluit, to large prestigious concert halls like Mozartsal in Vienna.

Verch's ability to preserve the authentic folk traditions of the past and reintroduce them into the musical landscape of the present is a testament to her masterful musicianship and widespread appeal.

On July 24, 2020 April Verch released a new album, Top of the Hill , made for children & for the young at heart! April has also released a video, I Want to Help (an April Verch original) of one of ten tracks from Top of the Hill

Jamming Over the Internet

Sunday, May 2nd, 6:30 PM

Online via Zoom

This class is lead by Brian Walker, the main sound engineer at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Brian's class consists of six weekly 75-minute sessions held online via Zoom.

Brian says,
Like a lot of people, I've been frustrated by my inability to play music with others in-person and joining a zoom session where only one person at a time can be heard just didn't feel like playing together. So last year I started researching ways to actually play with other people in real-time over the internet and it's been a great experience - I now have weekly rehearsals with two groups, and it's fantastic.

Now that I've done the research, I thought it might be helpful to teach a class on the subject. It starts on May 2nd.

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel:

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward. ↑Top↑

Playing for The Plough and Stars

A Musical Benefit for a San Francisco Landmark Pub

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the current pandemic and related public health restrictions have put a stop to all that for over a year now. The resulting business losses threaten to put The Plough out of business permanently, but there has been a sustained community crowdfunding effort that gives hope to resist and keep this iconic Celtic business going, if the community can sustain this support long enough.

To that end, Uber-Irish Culture Maven Autumn Rhodes organized this online series of short vignettes, and back on February 12th of this year, local Irish mandolinist Marla Fibish kicked the project off with this post on the Plough and Stars Facebook Page:

I'm proud to kick off our effort to save the Plough and Stars in San Francisco! For 45 years, The Plough and Stars has been the heart of live Irish and Americana music in the San Francisco area. COVID-19 and its subsequent aftermath are threatening the Plough's existence. Let's play tunes for the Plough so we can have a home for music for the next 45 years. Show your support here:

Join in the fun by recording yourself playing a tune or singing a song and tagging @ThePloughandStars and #playingfortheplough. Share the GoFundMe link and nominate friends to participate!

Marla Fibish

One year on, the Plough was still closed on Saint Patrick's Day, but proprietor Sean Heaney and his team got a boost with this detailed article by Dianne de Guzman in the San Francisco newsletter, 'SF Gate'

So now you, our reader, can help support this cherished Celtic cultural institution, while enjoying the dozens of resulting videos by clicking on the links to the right, and then on this one,, and making a contribution!

Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

Breaking News at The Duke

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA, 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

Publican Stan Gamble and his partners have an update! Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website or call 408-446-3853.

'I am in the city every 2-3 months and The Chieftain is an absolutely integral part of every trip. Mark runs an amazing, authentic Irish pub. Major plus, the only place I know of in northern California to get Kilkenny!!'

'Walked in, Saturday night about 7pm and there was a table right inside the door. We had a shepherds pie and an Irish stew. The shepherds pie was actually made with lamb! The live music was great entertainment too!'
