Report: 155th Scottish Highland Gathering and Games

Alameda County Restrictions Ruled
But the Games Went On!

By Cecilia Fábos-Becker

I'm sure readers, like us, had noticed the allowed attendance recently at baseball games, soccer games and even the 'Bottlerock Concert.' We were all grateful and hopeful when Alameda County finally allowed the San Francisco Caledonian Club to hold the first Scottish (with Irish also) Gathering and Games in the greater Bay area in 2 years.

However, first, Alameda County only made its decision to allow the gathering and games at all just six weeks before the date it was to be held. The SF Caledonian Club did a magnificent Herculean effort to pull together the fine festival it did.

What people may not know, however, is there were serious additional county limitations. Despite the likely heat of the two days, no buildings were allowed for vendors and their customers. The county also has not added any trees to the area where a number of tents usually are near the east gate, and were again, this year. It was 96 degrees as a high on Sunday. Between this restriction, and the fires in the northern and eastern parts of the state hampering the ability of a number of vendors to even get to the festival, the number of vendors was only about one-quarter of what is usually seen. Part of the Caledonian club's festival revenues come from vendor fees.

Additionally, and even worse, the county decided that the total number of participants and attendees TOGETHER was to be limited to 6,500 persons each day. According to officers of the organization, this is 'about one-third of a normal year in which the organization makes a modest profit.' The organization 'knew it was going to lose money this year but felt it was important to the Scottish (and Irish) communities to go forward.' We asked a few more questions and the President and others admitted that 'some donations would be helpful.'

The organization has been struggling since the worst heat year of 2016 and attempting to find ways to improve the festival and contend better with the heat with little success. Then the pandemic hit.

The SF Caledonian Club has delivered a large, very good event for over 150 years and everyone who did attend this year was very happy to see this year's festival. This effort deserves praise and support. We urge those who could not attend the festival, in large measure due to the county's limitations to please send some donations to the San Francisco Caledonian Club to show their support and encourage another, larger and better festival, again, next year. Here is a link to obtain more information as to how to donate. https://caledonian.org/contact-us

Celtic Accordion World Masters in Concert

Online via Facebook Live!

Accordion Fridays is back with a mix of folk, European and independent music. Our featured artist is Skyler Fell from Joshua Tree, California. We'll also have great tunes from: Renée de la Prade, Jet Black Pearl and Salane.

TIME ZONES — ARTISTS INFO — LINKS:
• 11:00 AM PDT/2:00 PM EDT/7:00 PM GMT/8:00 PM CET
Renée de la Prade brings a set of lively stomp-and-holler tunes with her button accordion, voice, and her boots, mixing Cajun, blues, reggae, Irish, French, punk, and other flavors that taste good together for a rocking-good show. Playing live in Hamburg, Germany

• 1:00 PM PDT/4:00 PM EDT/9:00 PM GMT/10:00 PM CET
Jet Black Pearl traces her musical roots to the back of a thrift store in Prague, where Jetty Swart (Jet Black Pearl) stumbled upon a fancy accordion. She smuggled it back home to the Netherlands and then spent many years in France, perfecting her songwriting and performance skills. Just when the French started to give her songwriter awards (Mais oui!), she moved to Portland, Oregon. Now she sings in French and English a show like a mad hatter’s European gypsy tea party with a hip hop attitude and Dutch accent.

• 5:00 PM PDT/8:00 PM EDT
Skyler Fell Besides riding horses and repairing accordions at her shop in the desert town of Joshua Tree, CA, Skyler's latest project is a trio she calls 'Tumbleweed Timemachine', composed of accordion, standup bass and guitar, and inspired by a lot of folk punk and folk music. Skyler will be armed with a repertoire of dark-carnival originals, country-twang tunes, and also some Eastern European klezmer music.

• 7:00 PM PDT/10:00 PM EDT
Salane is an accordionist and singer from Oakland, CA with a wacky sense of humor and exuberant stage presence. Her music ranges from wild to goofy to spooky and haunting... she's going live from the Gun Street Girls page, a sure sign that we can expect some of her excellent Tom Waits covers. Oakland, CA USA

Stepwise is a traditional Celtic folk duo consisting of Liam Lewis (mandolin, guitar, fiddle, voice) and Olivia Breidenthal (fiddle and voice). They perform a mixture of traditional Irish songs with tight vocal harmonies and traditional Irish tune sets. Olivia is a practitioner of the Galway fiddle style with influences including Kevin Burke, the Kane Sisters, and Liz Carroll. Together, their instrumental arrangements feature intricate twin fiddles or groovy rhythm guitar fit for a traditional Ceili or the discerning ears of an Irish-enthusiast audience.

Seeking a safe and socially distant place to meetup and play tunes, Stepwise was created very organically in the park; purely because it was too much fun to play so many good tunes together and not share it with an audience.

UnveilingEmmetStatueSF
Unveiling Emmet's Statue in San Francisco

Robert Emmet Days

Saturday, September 18th @ 2:00 PM
Presentation @ UICC @ 2700 45th Avenue, San Francisco

Sunday, September 19th @ 12:30 PM
Public Memorial @ Band Concourse, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

One of four statues created by Jerome Connor in 1916, the figure of Robert Emmet stands outside the California Academy of Sciences building overlooking the Band Concourse in the Golden Gate Park. Donated to the Park by James D. Phelan, San Francisco mayor and son of Irish immigrants, the statue was unveiled by Eamon De Valera in July of 1919 while he was on a fundraising tour of the United States. Emmet served as an inspiration to the Irish republicans in the years leading up to 1916 uprising.

Each year the public is invited by the United Irish Societies of San Francisco (UIS), to attend a pair of moving events in his honor.

On Saturday, Ruan O'Donnell, noted Irish historian and author of Robert Emmet and the Rising of 1803, will share with us his unique insights on Robert Emmet at his presentation at the United Irish Cultural Center.

'Robert Emmet is arguably the most popular and least understood Irish patriot of his generation. Far more significant within the leadership of the revolutionary United Irishmen than generally acknowledged, Emmet's heroic legacy extended to the USA where he has been memorialized to an extent unmatched in his native country.' —Ruan O'Donnell

Ruan will be joined by local musicians.

On Sunday, the UIS lays a wreath at the foot of Robert Emmet's statue at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr., the Band Concourse in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This ceremony commemorates Emmet's struggle for Irish independence and for the civil rights of disenfranchised Irish Catholics. The UIS remembers his heroism with Irish music, dance, and a recitation of his memorable Speech from Dock, which he delivered at his trial on the eve of his execution.

Excerpt from Robert Emmet's Speech from the Dock:
'Let no man write my epitaph: for as no man who knows my motives dare now vindicate them. Let them and me repose in obscurity and peace, and my tomb remain uninscribed, until other times, and other men, can do justice to my character; when my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then, and not till then, let my epitaph be written. I have done.'

Although they were both leaders of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, Robert Emmet came from a wealthy Anglo-Irish Protestant family unlike Huguenot Theobald Wolfe Tone. The Emmets sympathised with Irish Catholics general disenfrancisement, and especially their lack of fair representation in Parliament, as well as with the rebel colonists in the American Revolution. While Emmet's efforts to rebel against British rule failed, his actions and his Speech from the Dock' after his conviction, inspired his compatriots, and expecially the Irish Republicans in the years leading up to the 1916 uprising.

An unexpected romance turns the Mayo family farm upside down and changes the course of lives, the family, and the farm in what many consider America's first great tragic drama. Robert and Andrew Mayo, and neighbor Ruth Atkins grew up together as brothers and sister, but when love joins the picture everything changes. Destinies are disrupted and a chain of well-intended decisions leads to dire consequences. Beyond the Horizon won Eugene O'Neill his first Pulitzer Prize and put O'Neill on the Broadway map.

The play Beyond the Horizon calls for a combination of outdoor and indoor scenes, which have traditionally been difficult to represent. Our production will be filmed to highlight the natural beauty and farm-like qualities of the Tao House property.  Additionally, two live performances of the play will take place with seating at reduced capacity. These special live performances will utilize a combination of outdoor and indoor settings which require some minimal walking.

O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat
An Irish Music Camp Like No Other!

Thursday, October, 21st 7:00 PM CDT - Sunday October 24th

Hoblitzelle Camp & Conference Center, 8060 Singleton Rd, Midlothian, TX

COVID Policy
After considering the current state of the pandemic worsened by the Delta variant, we have decided to require all our participants at the 2021 O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat to be fully vaccinated and, under certain conditions, masked. We apologize for any inconvenience or disruption this may cause those who have already enrolled. Here is our new COVID Policy -- https://oflahertyretreat.org/covid-policy/.

The 18th annual O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat will be this year's premiere gathering of Irish music lovers nurturing the tradition that we hold close to our hearts.

This unique event immerses you in a complete traditional Irish music community for four days of classes, sessions, concerts, dances, camaraderie and learning in depth on dozens of aspects of Irish culture, including Enrichment classes, Informances, and dozens of Workshops.

Each year we invite internationally respected musicians from within the Irish music tradition to perform and teach our classes. Organized by the Traditional Irish Music Education Society (TIMES), we also engage a core group of local and area-wide volunteers and staff who are dedicated to making the retreat a memorable experience for each participant.

This year, we gather on Thursday, October, 21st at 7:00 PM CDT for a BBQ dinner followed by a concert and the airing of a documentary video that was made about last year's virtual event. Classes and other activities begin Friday morning.

Check out our YouTube Channel for videos of everything you can expect at O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat.

Named in honor of Jim O'Flaherty, a musician who immigrated from Ireland to North Texas spreading the Irish music tradition through his family, friends and community, the O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat continues with Jim's commitment to help others learn, enjoy, and grow in these rich traditions. Read More about our history…

An Goilin
An Góilín

An Góilín Traditional Singers

International Singing Session
Online occasional Fridays, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM PDT
(See Calendar goilin.com/calendar )

Online via Zoom

Since 1979, Dublin's An Góilín Traditional Singers Club members have gathered each Friday evening at 9:00 PM local time for singing sessions.

But when these indoor gatherings were restricted on March 27th, 2020, An Góilín joined the mass migration of such musical gatherings to the Zoom online meeting platform, and to their surprise, An Góilín members have found a much wider audience joining in!

Máire Ni Chróinin says:
The shift to Zoom has allowed us to connect with an unexpected global audience. It has been a pleasure to hear traditional songs from singers all around the world and to get to know singers from Australia, the USA and from different parts of Europe. It has also allowed us to reconnect with our friends all across the UK who have more opportunity to come to our in-person sessions during 'normal' times, but who were grounded just like everyone else when the pandemic broke out.

We are just now getting back to meeting in person at the Teachers Club and are all looking forward to getting back to singing, listening to traditional songs in person, so there will be no live stream this week. Still, we look forward to reconnecting with our international attendees soon - it is our intention to use technology to connect every so often with the international section of our community.

Information on An Góilín, including our calendar of events, is at http://www.goilin.com

This year's Frank Harte Festival (24 - 26 September 2021) will be a hybrid festival, with a pre-recorded singing walk (normally a themed singing and walking tour which takes place at locations around Dublin city), a live streamed workshop and concert (subject to restrictions in force at the time) and live Zoom singing sessions. The walk, workshop and concert will all be streamed from the Frank Harte Festival Facebook page and from An Góilín's YouTube channel. All information on Festival guests etc. is available now at www.frankhartefestival.ie, and ticketing information will be available shortly. — Máire.

Michael Eskin says:
With other Zoom sessions either closing down or changing to once-a-month format, and a few in person sessions restarting, I wanted to remind everyone that I'll continue to host The Ould Sod Virtual Session on Zoom every Thursday evening for as long as there are enough players each time, and we've generally been between 20 and 30 players on the past few Thursdays.

Plough

The Plough and Stars Update

Wednesday — Sunday 4 to 12 PM

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

COVID Policy
Vaccination and Masks
Required Indoors
Make sure you bring your proof of vaccination when you come to The Plough.
Sean Heaney says:
Music at the Plough is back. We aren hosting an instrumental Irish Traditional session Sunday afternoons at 3:00 PM and a song session lead by Christy O'Connell and Vince Keehan on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Drop by for a pint!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the COVID pandemic and related public health restrictions put a stop to all that for over a year. The resulting business losses threatened to put The Plough out of business permanently, but a sustained community crowdfunding effort helped keep it going, and now it appears to have emerged intact.

Check The Plough and Stars Website for the latest updates.

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR8XRkX_HX9NdL7bRKCp-g

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward.

DukeofEdinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

Open 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA

Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website www.theduke.com or call 408-446-3853.
