Spreading Awareness!

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan made a proclamation that March would be Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The original proclamation called upon all Americans to ensure that every child and adult with a developmental disability has access to the supports and services they need to reach their potential.

Here at Emmaus, we believe everyone with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserves to live their best lives! We use our platforms to lift the stories of our friends and family with developmental disabilities and celebrate the fantastic work that Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) do every day to support people with developmental disabilities.

Taking Action to Change Lives

For the past several years, Emmaus advocates have raised concerns about the severe shortage of high-quality Direct Support Professionals. Year after year, we have been lifting this issue to our legislators, insisting that this crisis receives the attention it deserves. And that advocacy is working!

This year, Governor Parson has recommended a HUGE investment in services for Missourians with developmental disabilities. This is a HISTORIC step that will help us stabilize our workforce, recruit new team members, and support our clients. But this is only the beginning, we encourage you to join us in our work to advocate for better rates on behalf of our clients.

The Work of Emmaus...

“I’ve been fortunate to be able to do things by myself, especially from the press of a button and using my voice. I really like how Alexa can turn my television and lights on and off in my bedroom.”
