Eve's Talking TED

In her TED talk, Spaceship Media cofounder and CEO Eve Pearlman explains (in just nine minutes!) the who, what, where, why, and how of Spaceship Media's Dialogue Journalism practice. Watch the talk here. Also, check out the other speakers who were part of the same January TED Salon, Up for Debate, at TED's New York studio. Thanks, TED for sharing our work!

Accelerate Local News!

On March 19 and 20, innovative journalism leaders from around the country gathered in Denver for the Accelerate: Local News Summit. Spaceship co-founder and CEO Eve Pearlman attended, bringing with her Spaceship’s vision for local news, Spaceship Local. We’re working hard at Spaceship HQ, mapping a model for taking Dialogue Journalism into local communities. If you are interested in being involved or learning more about Spaceship Local, let us know at spaceshipmedia@spaceshipmedia.org.

We are also honored to have been mentioned alongside several incredible startup media nonprofits in Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter’s newsletter in his recap of the event.

Speaking of Local ...

A late night conversation with her dad about his news-watching habits led Spaceship's Director of Innovation Adriana García to reflect on the importance of local news and information to our country. “Democracy depends on us being able to solve our most mundane of local issues in a congress of the people informed with real facts working to make it better for the vast majority of us,” she writes. Read Adriana’s piece here.

Kettering: An Intellectual Candy Store

The Kettering Foundation, a nonprofit, operating foundation rooted in the American tradition of cooperative research, hosted a Multinational Research Exchange in Dayton, Ohio, in early April. Kettering’s primary research question: What makes democracy work as it should? Adriana García was there, pondering, with the other participants, democracy, citizenship, journalism and how the three interact. More about the Kettering Foundation, which has been a generous supporter of Spaceship's work, here.

Mercer University Update

Students lead a conversation in middle Georgia

Spaceship Media is delighted to be working with students in an engagement journalism class at Mercer University’s Center for Collaborative Journalism in Macon, Georgia. The students' Dialogue Journalism project, On the Table, has been up and running since early April! The project is a conversation between restaurant-goers and servers in Middle Georgia. The students are both moderating and reporting. We are so excited to see how this project develops, both for the participants and student journalists. Special thanks to Debbie Blankenship, Adam Ragusea and Sonya Green at Mercer for their partnership!

Moderation workshops

One thing we are often asked is How? How do you moderate these conversations?! Spaceship’s Adriana García and Cailley LaPara worked with members of Mother Jones’ audience engagement team to develop a new strategy for moderating their Discussion Club, a Facebook group for political discussion. "The presentation was super useful," said Kanyakrit Vongkiatkajorn, Assistant Editor for Audience and Breaking News at Mother Jones. "I think it’s extremely important that you laid out the things moderators do and the kinds of qualities and skills needed for the role. I don’t think enough people understand (myself included, before I started actually doing this) what is required," said Kanyakrit. If you want to know more about Spaceship’s Moderation Training workshops, please reach out to spaceshipmedia@spaceshipmedia.org.

What we’ve been listening to: Reckonings

Looking for a good listen on your way to work? We’ve been enjoying Reckonings, a podcast that explores “what moves us to shift our political worldviews, transcend extremism, and bring our values into the workplace.” We recommend starting with Episode #20, “A Journalist Reckons with Truth,” in which host Stephanie Lepp and journalist Lewis Wallace discuss “alternative facts, fake news and how journalists are grappling with this moment.”
