Torque Trophy August 2018

The 2018 Torque Trophy has been run and won by Andrew Stevens with the under 2 litre class being won by Marty Willard.

The Torque Trophy was run on Sunday with the days weather being all but perfect conditions for motor racing with clear sky’s and 24 degrees.

12 cars started race one with 11 cars starting race 3. Unfortunately Paul Kluck had ECU problems and retired his Nissan for the day during race 2.

The day was dominated by a mighty duel between Andrew Stevens and Brad Cuss. Andrew won race 1 and 2 with Brad winning race 3. The two seconds for Brad secured 2nd place for the Torque Trophy.

The racing between the two drivers was impressively close with total race time for race 2 and 3 only being separated by point 7 of a second. Both Andrew and Brad certainly kept each other honest during the day with only the slightest mistake or mechanical problem and the Trophy could have gone either way. Andrew’s fastest lap on the day was 59.9 with Brad’s being 61.0 secs

With Paul Kluck retired, good racing was had between Craig Maloney, Mark Conacher and Shaun Mulquiney with Andrew Souvertjis, Aiden Friel, Nick Tagaris, Brent Peters and Drew Watkins all having right royal ding dong……

Other unfortunate retired cars on the day were Grant Sealey and Jai Philp.

Marty Willard and Kelvin Sharp represented the under 2 litre class with Marty being the victor on the day.

The spectators and crew’s were treated to a lunchtime car display, track walk and live driver interview on the start/finish line. To my knowledge this is the first time this has been organised and it was a success with good spectator number’s, including children, enjoying the track walk. Some children taking advantage of a sit in a race car on a race track with delighted mums and dads snapping away for the family album.

A special thanks needs to
go to Kelly Maloney for the work behind the scenes to make this happen. Kelly also does a fantastic job of managing our media and exposure.

The Torque Trophy presentation was also enjoyed on track at the end of race 3 with all spectators and crews invited on track. Both Andrew and Marty were awarded Trophie’s and a bottle of champagne each trackside with lots of congratulations being accepted by worthy winners.

The 2018 Torque Trophy was a successful days racing with a healthy grid of cars and good close racing…..many thanks to all drivers and crew’s whom competed on the day.

Welcome Aidan Friel

Welcome to the Street Car Racing Association Aidan Friel. Aidan comes to us from a drifting background

The Paddy Drifter moved to Australia 7 years ago. The beast of a machine is a  Toyota Ae86 4agte 16v engine. With lots of development in this motor is has taking 2 years to get it where it is now.

Aidan's words after his first circuit event

"My first circuit race is done and dusted..was a great but challenging weekend for me and the car..more setup and seat time is needed as I did more drifting than straight line racing..I’ve figured out I need bigger brakes as most fellow competitors are running brakes the size of my rims..and luckily I bought some spare rear pads as the car consumed 3 sets of rear pads in a day including putting the rear calipers on fire..but the flying 86 held its own and showed potential in its first outing breaking into the 64s..
no recovery, no dragged from the sand (although on race 3 I was lucky to still have my hydro handbrake to keep me out of it) and drove the car on the trailer with no mechanicals and no damage at the end of the day."

We look forward to seeing Aidan out on the track with us again!!

From The Driver's Seat

Paul Kluck from Topcat Racing unfortunately saw end to his day early last weekend at the Torque Trophy! But read his awesome write up of the final race!

"It did give me a chance to watch my fellow competitors in action and they put on a great show in the final race of the Torque Trophy. Watching Brad slip through to the front like Moses, parting the waters, to lead the race by the start of the second lap, was biblical, then following Andrew carve through the field for the inevitable showdown with Brad at the front was epic.

The battles through the field were just as intense with Shaun surrounded by a hungry pack baying at his rear bar, including a hard charging Evo piloted by Nick and including Martin and Kelvin having their own under 2litre battle to fight, ending with a cloud of tyre smoke as Shaun pulled the trigger on a late braking manoeuvre into turn one that ended with his rear bar kissing the sand trap and bringing out the safety car on lap 7 of 15.

Meanwhile Craig was having his own battle in the early stages with the ex drift-spec AE 86 piloted by Aiden who was putting on a spectacular performance in his first run with Street Cars. Who knows what he could do on a proper set of tyres! Once Craig cleared Aiden he was in for a safe 3rd as long as his car held together - never a certainty in this event! Brent limped off the field, a wounded combatant after only 2 laps, hopefully living to fight another day after throwing his Skyline around the track like a seasoned veteran during the previous races.

Mark was the beneficiary of a slow restart from Andrew "Souvlaki"once the safety car came in and charged past with his SR20 Datto rocket before they'd even hit Cat Corner, then picked off Aiden in the same lap to sit in fourth, holding onto this position to the finish. Brad took the last race with the cleanest laps you'll see keeping a slightly woundex Andrew at bay (just!) was and runner up for the day but Andrew played the safe game and came in for a second but got to etch his name in history as the 2018 and 4 times winner of the Torque Trophy.

Craig came in for a solid 3rd place and 3rd for the day. What a race! Hard, clean, fair and entertaining racing.

The only bad part? I wasn't on track with this crowd! Seeya all back next year!"
