Tutor Appreciation 2017!

Cal-SOAP Staff, Tutors, CPAs, and CAC Staff
To wrap up up the school year, Cal-SOAP hosted a beach-side lunch for our tutors and college peer advisers. Tacos, quesadillas, and refreshments were provided by El Zarape.
Farewell To Our Graduating Tutors

PAL Teen Center Art Exhibit Shout-Out
On May 24, 2017 a collaborative art reception was put on by three students-- two from Santa Barbara High School, Erin Lazaro and Brenda Ocampo, and one from Santa Barbara Junior High School, Jennifer Gonzalez-- with the assistance of two tutors. The tutors, Laura Addison and Julie Aguilar, worked with the students to work on pieces to convey how each artist feels about depression, gratefulness, their self-esteem, suicide prevention and friendship. It was a creative process that was worked on for several weeks where the artists were able to paint, write, and record creatively in a way that allowed them to grow into more mature young ladies. The art reception was held at the Santa Barbara Police Activities League during their end of the year celebration. As a final lesson on self-love, the students were taken to get makeovers for the reception. The students were able to see their family and friends enjoy the art they had created, and they all felt very proud.

Meet The Staff

Cal-SOAP would like to introduce our new staff members, Mario Aviles and Jennifer Lopez. Previously, Mario and Jennifer worked as tutors and are soon to graduate from UCSB. They will be joining Project Director Joanna Romo and Tutor Coordinator Linda Figueroa.

"Hi everyone, my name is Mario and I am the Programs Coordinator for Cal-SOAP. I am currently a senior at UCSB, double majoring in Psychology and Sociology. I initially began working for Cal-SOAP as a tutor and later a college peer adviser. During my time in the program I have learned to not only tutor but also mentor students, these invaluable lessons have taught me the importance of higher education. I look forward to working with such dedicated staff and tutors who deeply value student's education."
-Mario Aviles
"My name is Jennifer Lopez and I am Cal-SOAP’s Office Assistant. I will be graduating from UC Santa Barbara on June 2017 with a Bachelors of Art degree in Sociology and another Bachelors of Art degree in Chicanx Studies. Coming from a low-income community where my high school lacked the resources needed to pursue higher education, I became very interested in Cal-SOAP. One of my goals in life is to pursue a Masters degree in Higher Education, where I would have the ability to continue helping communities such as the one I grew up in."
