Presentations and Workshops

Since both the FAFSA and California Dream Act Applications opened on October 1st this year, Santa Barbara Cal-SOAP has spent the fall season educating, supporting, and connecting with high school seniors throughout southern Santa Barbara County.  With the assistance of our partners, Cal-SOAP traveled to 5 local high schools and provided informational presentations and resources about financial aid to nearly 1,500 students.  These Financial Aid Presentations serve as an opportunity to inform students of the various sources of financial aid available to them.

In addition to these informational sessions, Cal-SOAP also hosted 5 Cash for College Workshops.  These are events where financial aid experts (Cal-SOAP staff, financial aid professionals, and tutors) can help parents and students who are filling out financial aid applications (FAFSA & CA Dream Act App) for the first time, on an individual basis.  Cal-SOAP will host two more Cash for College Workshops in the winter (February 11th at Santa Barbara Jr. High School and February 25th at La Cuesta High School).

University is Possible!
¡Universidad es Posible!
SB Cal-SOAP has partnered with the Franklin Service Center and UCSB Pathways to host a series of University is Possible! workshops to inform Spanish-speaking parents about higher education. These workshops are held once a month and cover a variety of topics such as A-G requirements, the high school time line, financial aid information, and more.  In addition to informational presentations, these workshops also provide families to meet professionals and to gather resources from various community agencies.

The next workshop will be held on December 8, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Franklin Elementary School cafeteria. English translation will be provided for non-Spanish speaking parents.

Santa Barbara Cal-SOAP
Honors Mr. Bob Keatinge

Mr. Bob Keatinge will be honored for his thirty two years of commitment to the Santa Barbara Cal-SOAP Consortium on December 2nd at the Twelv35 Teen Center. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, Mr. Keatinge announced that he would be retiring and stepping down from the SB Cal-SOAP Governing Board. SB Cal-SOAP and Board Members will recognize his thirty two years of service and commitment to being a part of Cal-SOAP since its inception.

In the fall of 1984, SB Cal-SOAP began the task of helping to reach more students by providing information and academic support to those who were under-achieving.  The Santa Barbara Consortium began with 7 Board Members, which included Mr. Keatinge.  Mr Keatinge then went on to always maintain a seat on the Governing Board, which means he has been through all the changes and transformation that the Santa Barbara Cal-SOAP has undergone over the past 32 years.  “Each Director brings a vision and works accordingly. Services provided may differ, but the focus stays the same”.  Mr. Keatinge expressed that he is proud of the work that SB Cal-SOAP has done to get students, who had possibly not thought of furthering their education, to go to college.  His wife, Jeanne
Keatinge, stated that "the Cal-SOAP program is one of the accomplishments that he is proudest to have been a part of and he has great memories of the many people who he has worked with over the years!"

The Santa Barbara Cal-SOAP Consortium is proud to have had such a dedicated member from the very start.  Thank you very much for all the work that you have done and we wish you all the best!

Campus Visit Highlights
A representative from The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara expressed that she was extremely grateful for the recent campus visit to Cal State University Northridge.  She shared that the students showed great enthusiasm and participation.  “It was a great day! Thank you Cal-SOAP!” – Ielaf Altoma.

Cal-SOAP would also like to thank and recognize Santa Barbara Air Bus for their support and the hard work they put in to serve our Cal-SOAP students.

In Memory
Maribel Franco
SB Cal-SOAP would like to extend our heartfelt condolences at this time as we remember someone who was a hard worker, someone who stood on principles, and was a mentor to her students and co-workers at Cal-SOAP.

On Sunday, October 23rd, former Cal-SOAP Lead Tutor Maribel Franco passed away. Maribel worked for Cal-SOAP as a tutor at the Police Activities League throughout her four years at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Maribel was a talented and dedicated individual that made it her life’s duty to be the best tutor and mentor she could for all the students she worked with. Maribel’s smile was one that could light up a room and her positive energy was what made her support to Cal-SOAP so delightful. She always strived to be the best role model and go above and beyond in her work. Her dedication to our program will never be forgotten. Thank your, Maribel, for being a magnificent mentor to all students. You legacy as a tutor will stay with us forever.
