Summer 2017

Campus Visit

On August 4, 2017, Cal-SOAP provided the students from Los Compadres and Las Comadres of Santa Barbara a campus visit to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. This group of students were given a USC guided tour around the campus and were given the opportunity to ask questions on getting to college and the different majors available. They even had the chance to visit the famous room with Heisman trophies and the Jimmy Lovine and Andre Young Academy of the Arts, or as the students called it, "the Dr. Dre School."

Meet Cal-SOAP's New Programs Coordinator: Vincent Dodero!
Vincent Dodero has been working in various non-profit sectors throughout his life. His passion for assisting first generation students in navigating through the higher education process stems from his experiences as a minority and the help and guidance he has received from nonprofits throughout his life. Prior to working with Cal-SOAP, Vincent worked with adults with developmental and behavioral disabilities, providing them with support in their day to day lives.

Vincent grew up in Goleta, California, and is the middle of three adopted children. He went to Ithaca College in Upstate New York, graduating in 2016 with a B.S. in Integrated Marketing Communications and a minor in Sociology. While in school, Vincent was a NCAA swimmer and volunteered with the campuses Office of Student Engagements & Multicultural Affairs as a Diversity Peer Educator, facilitating workshops and programs relating to the importance of diversity on campus.

Vincent is excited to be back in sunny southern California and to have the opportunity to serve the youth of this community!
Tutor Spotlights
We welcome recently promoted College Students Julie Aguilar and Makayla Rawlins to the Cal-SOAP Tutoring Program. From tutors to College Peer Advisors, Makayla and Julie will be working alongside the Cal-SOAP staff to assist students with basic advising questions and serve as a resource to connect underrepresented students with our Main office and promote our Program’s resources.

We are happy to be able to have new crew members join our team in efforts to increase college access to all first generation students. We encourage all incoming tutors who wish to become a College Peer Advisor to inquire with in for further information.

Again, welcome Julie and Makayla!
