Meet our New Peer Advisors
My name is Jenny Martinez. I am a fourth year, Political Science major with a history minor at UCSB. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I enjoy discovering new shows on Netflix to binge watch. I also love to travel, over spring break I went to London and Barcelona. I aspire to be a positive role model for students, and plan to pursue a Masters in Social Work with the hopes of creating my own program to assist low-income, first-generation students back home.

My name is Evelyn Rojas. I am a 3rd year, Global Studies major at UCSB. I am from San Jose, California and I am 20 years old. My favorite type of food is seafood, especially sushi. I love to be outdoors and explore nature, but I also love to sleep and meet new people. My favorite activity is laughing so please feel free to email me jokes! I aspire to be the happiest human being in the world and spread joy around the world. I plan to be a positive role model to everyone so they see that it is not hard to be who they want to be. No matter what struggle we go through, it only makes us wiser and stronger.

My name is Madalyn Schultz. I am a 4th year student at UCSB, majoring in sociology and minoring in education. I am from a small town in Northern California that had very few resources for youth when I was a student. I am a first generation college student. Both of my parents dropped out of high school, and when I was in high school I watched other family members and close friends struggle with school before making the decision to drop out. All of these factors led me to have a passion for supporting underrepresented, low-income, first generation college-bound students. I have worked with Cal-SOAP as a tutor for over a year before becoming a Cal-SOAP Peer Advisor. After graduating from UCSB, I plan to enroll in UCSB’s teacher education program.

Tutor Spotlight

Ariannie Rodriguez

Ariannie Rodriguez has been a Cal-SOAP tutor since April of 2019. In a short amount of time Ariannie has shown a great amount of professionalism and passion for her work. What Ariannie enjoyed about working as a Cal-SOAP Tutor was helping students understand their school work. She loved seeing the progress they made and how their confidence would show once they truly understood the material. Ariannie states, "I know how hard school can be sometimes, so I like being the person that students can go to when they need help with an assignment." After Cal-SOAP Ariannie plans to obtain a job that will help her in preparation for Graduate School. Ariannie's long term goal is to become an educator for children in developing countries. Cal-SOAP has helped Ariannie gain the experience necessary to begin making a better world for children in developing countries.

Leslie Perez

Leslie Perez has been a Cal-SOAP tutor since 2016. What Leslie enjoyed about Cal-SOAP was being able to make connections with her community, and being exposed to the school settings in this day in age. Leslie also enjoyed how she was able to make an impact on the students she has been able to assist. Leslie plans on going to Graduate School to become a guidance counselor. Cal-SOAP helped Leslie realize through working with Cal-SOAP, the need for college awareness; especially for minority groups. Leslie observed that when students do not have role models who went to college, students then have little to no knowledge about higher education. Leslie hoped to continue to work in an organization that brings college awareness to students.
