TODAY'S ACTION ITEMS:

#VOTE4DCKIDS MOVEMENT EXPANDED THE DC ELECTORATE!

The countdown to the general election is ON!

With less than two weeks until Election Day, and only five days until early voting begins on October 27th, the parent-led #Vote4DCKids movement is ALREADY making an impact on our city’s voter turnout!

In the Primary Election held this June, about 60% of the 1,246 DC parents who committed to #Vote4DCKids cast their ballots in the primary! This is compared to the 26.1% of DC residents that cast their ballot for the SAME election!

So, what do these numbers mean? They show that parents who committed to #Vote4DCKids voted at a MUCH higher rate compared to DC as a whole!

And that’s NOT ALL!

260 parents who committed to #Vote4DCKids had not previously voted in the past three primary elections, but they made sure to cast their ballot in the June primary!

Why is this so MONUMENTAL? This means the #Vote4DCKids movement didn’t JUST turn out consistent voters, but it EXPANDED the electorate by turning out new voters and voters who had not participated in years!

The movement doesn’t stop here! Parent leaders are READY to continue to #Vote4DCKids this November.

PARENT LEADERS’ QUESTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES

Parent leaders came READY to ask the At-Large DC Council candidates the REAL questions about their plans to support our DC families and kids!

Check out their questions and the candidates’ responses!

Yael Meirovich, Ward 1 parent leader

COVID has been extremely challenging for families in DC, where every child’s distance learning experience looks different. We know that the loss in learning as a result will not be evenly distributed, and will certainly deepen already existing disparities. Families of and students who need special education or ELL services are feeling this even more now than they were before."

"What are your plans to ensure that the families of children suffering learning loss can receive the support needed now during distance learning and when schools reopen?”
See how the Candidates Responded!

Chelly Jones, Ward 4 parent leader

“I have two children who attend DCI, and my son has an IEP. While we are blessed to have a supportive and well-resourced SPED team at our current school, I know all too well the struggle when resources are limited. PAVE parent leaders have worked extremely hard prioritizing and addressing gaps in the education systems that do not align with what we need to be true for every family and every child across DC. At the core of our advocacy is a fight for basic educational rights."

"What is the number one right that you believe all parents should have?"
See how the Candidates Responded!

Jaimee Hall, Ward 7 parent leader

“In-person school is coming back soon, right now, DCPS is planning to reopen next month, while the public charter school my daughter attends has extended distance learning until January. I want to see a school reopening plan and process that is as safe and equitable as possible for ALL schools and families."

"How do you feel about continuing distance learning as an option for those parents and teachers that do not feel safe sending their children back to schools?”
See how the Candidates Responded!

Danielle Henry, Ward 5 parent leader

“What, in your opinion, is the most pressing education issue facing the District?”
